Elvis Presley Stole the Show in This Movie — But His Hair Tells Another Story

Posted on July 15, 2025

“Love Me Tender,” Elvis Presley’s debut movie, is a classic full of surprises.

You can watch the complete movie “Love Me Tender” on YouTube for free. Did you know that? For individuals who have never seen it before, it’s a rare treat. For fans who have been following Elvis Presley for a long time, it’s a chance to witness how charming he was when he first started out in Hollywood.

Elvis Presley wasn’t just the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll; he was everything. Elvis’s voice, dance routines, and natural acting abilities were all part of what made him so charming. In addition to singing, the King also acts and does a lot more than just sing.

A Different Kind of First
Elvis Presley’s first movie was Love Me Tender, which came out in 1956. There are parts of romance, family drama, and Western-style action in the movie, which takes place after the Civil War. The moniker was changed from The Reno Brothers to The Love Me Tender Brothers to take advantage of the song’s quick rise to fame.

Elvis played Clint Reno, the youngest of four brothers. He was the only character in any of Elvis’s movies who was based on a real person from the past. The movie is partly based on the Reno Gang, who were the first persons in the U.S. to rob railroads in the 1860s.

The Premiere’s Hysteria
When Love Me Tender opened at the Paramount Theatre in New York City, more than 1,500 fans camped out overnight under a gigantic 40-foot cutout of Elvis. During his moments, people in the theatre yelled so loudly that they drowned out a lot of what he said. It wasn’t only the first time a movie was shown; it was a cultural event.

The Boy Who Made the Dream
Elvis worked as a cinema usher before he ever worked on a movie set. He looked up to actors like James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Tony Curtis. He wanted to be a serious actor like them. Elvis wanted to be more than just a famous performer.

Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s manager, had other plans. He thought that each movie would be a vehicle for Elvis’s music to get out there. That meant that the tales were just as important as the sounds.

Elvis still worked hard at his career. He was only third-billed, after Richard Egan and Debra Paget, but he knew not only his lines but also everyone else’s. David Weisbart, the producer, later said that Elvis was “humble, polite, and very serious about acting.”

Behind the Scenes: Secret Gems & Touching Surprises

“You can learn more about someone in a few hours than in weeks of talking to them all the time.” — Debra Paget

Elvis didn’t want to sing in the movie at first. But it didn’t stay that way for long. He starts singing five minutes after he first appears on screen, and by the time of the charity performance sequence, it feels more like 1956 than 1865. Girls who yell? In the Old West? Elvis’s style is completely different from anything else, even if it doesn’t exactly show what happened in the past.

It’s interesting that Jeffrey Hunter and Robert Wagner both said no to the role of Clint Reno at first. Once Elvis was cast, the producers added fresh sequences and songs to his part to show off how charming he was.

The Music That Does It
The song that plays in the movie’s title wasn’t written for Elvis at all. The song “Love Me Tender” is based on the song “Aura Lee,” which was popular during the Civil War. Ken Darby, Vera Matson’s husband, wrote the new words. Before the movie came out, Elvis sang it on The Ed Sullivan Show. RCA got over a million preorders. It became a gold record before it ever hit shops.

The song was number one on the charts for five weeks in a row, and Elvis would keep singing it live for the next 20 years. This shows that the music has lasting force and deep emotional impact.

The Effect of Debra Paget
Debra Paget was just 22 years old at the time, but she was already a big name in Hollywood. When she met Elvis, she had no idea what to expect. She said, “I’d heard and read a lot about this new young singing star, and most of it wasn’t good.”

But Elvis caught her off guard. He was nice and polite, and even nice to her mom. They clicked right away, like two shy people who had never met before.

Elvis fell hard. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. Some reports indicate he even asked her to marry him, but Debra said no because her parents didn’t want her to. She was already in love with Howard Hughes.

But her effect stayed. People think that Priscilla Presley replicated Debra’s renowned “Love Me Tender” haircut to catch Elvis’s attention years later.

Elvis’s mother changed the end.
You might not know this, but Elvis’s character dies in the movie. Cathy shot Clint Reno and then held him in her arms. Everyone was shocked by his demise, especially his mother. She was really sad about the ending and urged the people who made the movie to make it less sad.

So they added one last scene: Elvis’s shadow singing “Love Me Tender” over the credits. Yes, it was nice, however it made a significant mistake in the story. Elvis had dyed his hair black by this stage, which was a big shift from earlier scenes when he had light brown hair.

Love Me Tender is full of cute mistakes that only add to its old-fashioned charm for those who pay close attention:

One character unzips their pants, even though zippers weren’t invented till years later.

In the background of a scenario that is supposed to take place during the Civil War, there is a car from the 1950s.

During “We’re Gonna Move,” Elvis stops playing the guitar, but the strumming keeps going.

In one moment, a hidden gun shows up, disappears, and then shows up again when the camera angles change.

These few errors don’t affect the film’s legacy. If anything, they make it more lovable—a piece of history that has been maintained in film and memory.

Something That Will Last
Elvis’s first movie in Hollywood was Love Me Tender. It wasn’t his best movie, but it was his first. He had big eyes, worked hard, and had an optimistic heart.

It makes us remember that even great people had to start somewhere. And sometimes they amaze us with both their talent and their passion.
