A Police Officer Helped in a Way That Touched Everyone Around

Posted on October 10, 2025

There was a lot of traffic, people were rushing around, and the pavement was incredibly hot, just like any other day in Coral Springs, Florida. But all changed in an instant when three cars got into an accident and obstructed traffic. Sirens rang, emergency vehicles came, and the air was thick with anxiety as drivers and bystanders gathered, scared and not sure what to do.

Officer Bryan Dougherty, who is on the Coral Springs Police Department’s elite SWAT unit, was one of the people that helped. People knew he could handle a lot of stress, therefore he probably had to deal with a lot of problems at work. But on this day, it wasn’t his tactical strategy that stood out; it was something far gentler and more honest.

A young kid stood to the side, trying not to cry, while police officers took statements and paramedics looked for injuries. His mom was clearly upset and talking to the first responders. They didn’t know whether to try to explain what had happened or console their child. Officer Dougherty realized how sad and alone the boy was in the middle of all the chaos at this very sensitive time.

Dougherty didn’t just pass by; he walked over.

He didn’t say anything, but he carefully lowered himself to the ground and sat cross-legged next to the child on the hot tarmac. There was no big gesture or effort to “fix” anything; all that was needed was to be there. Just being there softly and transparently. There was a toy fire truck in the middle of them. It was easy to understand, but forceful enough to help them get from shock to comfort. It didn’t matter if Dougherty had the thing with him or if it belonged to the youngster. What mattered was what it meant at the time: safety, fun, and being together.

He started talking to the kid in a friendly way and asked him which Disney characters he liked best. They talked and joked for a bit, and the boy stopped being scared. There were still loud voices and flashing lights all around them, but this one portion of the crash site changed into a peaceful place of kindness made by a police officer who knew that being brave often means being kind.

Janet Balestriero, a housewife from the region, saw it all happen. She was so struck by what she saw that she quickly shot a picture, not to use it, but to remember it. Later, she posted the picture on the Coral Springs Police Department’s Facebook site with a short, honest comment that said, “It was an act of kindness.” In this hectic world, I strive to do small things that are kind every day.

The post definitely hit home. It quickly gained a lot of likes, comments, and shares on social media. People from all across the country wrote to thank Officer Dougherty for being a good police officer and a nice person who was there when it counted most.

Clyde Parry, the police chief of Coral Springs, also spoke out and said, “I’m so proud of our officers.” These kinds of incidents happen all the time, but the news doesn’t report them very often. On a larger scale, his views were true: police officers are often kind and caring in situations that don’t make the news, which shows the heart behind the badge.

Janet is part of the Kindness Rock Project, which is a grassroots movement where people paint rocks with art or messages that make other people feel good and leave them in public places. She was so moved by the encounter that she told her friends about it. Officer Dougherty’s actions moved one person so much that she painted a rock with a Disney character and his badge number on it. This meeting was a simple way to honor a man whose act of kindness made a scary situation better.

No one in this narrative wanted attention or praise, which makes it different. Officer Dougherty didn’t aware that someone was taking a picture. He didn’t want anyone else to see him. He observed a kid who needed help and did what he thought would help at the time. It wasn’t rules; it was instinct.

No one was badly hurt in the event, which is good. But the emotional effects lasted a long time for the families concerned and for everyone who saw the picture that became famous.

A fully armed SWAT officer sits cross-legged on the ground next to a scared little boy and doesn’t move, cutting through the noise of everyday life. It reminds us that being brave doesn’t always mean doing anything big; sometimes the best thing to do is just sit down and be present.

In a society that moves quickly and seems divided, times like today urge us to stop and think about what really important. There won’t be any police reports about what Officer Dougherty did, and it might not even be on the news. But that boy and everyone else who saw the picture will always remember that time.

And maybe that’s what it means to be a hero: not just the big things you accomplish, but also the little things you do that come from the heart.
