Community in Shock After Fatal Shooting at Kentucky Church

Posted on July 14, 2025

In Lexington, Kentucky, on July 14, 2025 A gunman went on a violent rampage that crossed an airport road and a Baptist church sanctuary, shaking up a peaceful Sunday in Kentucky. A state officer was hurt badly, two churchgoers died, and the town was still in shock.

Around 11:40 AM, things started to get crazy near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington.

A traffic camera at Terminal Drive sent out an alert to the Kentucky State Police (KSP) trooper, who then began a traffic check.

The individual in the automobile shot the trooper, turning what should have been a simple encounter into a horrific one.

Officials said at a sad press conference in the afternoon, “The trooper had apparently pulled over the gunman… when the suspect shot him.”

The shooter, who was hurt, then stole another car and drove about 16 miles to Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington.

The suspect went onto the church grounds while cops were chasing them.

Lawrence Weathers, the chief of police in Lexington, talked about the horrible things that transpired and indicated that the gunman might have had something to do with the church.

The attacker began fire inside the church, and panicked people sought to escape the sudden violence.

Sadly, Christina Combs, 32, and Beverly Gumm, 72, were shot and died.

The attack on the church harmed two persons, one of whom was in very bad shape and had to go to the hospital.

Three officers from the Lexington Police Department stopped the gunman while other cops were chasing him.

According to Chief Weathers, the police shot and killed the person in question.

The police know who the shooter is, but they didn’t tell his family by Sunday afternoon.

In contrast, the KSP officer who was shot at the airport was taken to a hospital nearby because he was seriously harmed.

The Lexington Fire Department confirmed later that his health was stable.

Gena Roland, a witness, said how scary it was at the airport and how she almost got hit head-on when the shooter drove the wrong way down the airport drive.

Roland said that the trooper was thankfully awake and conscious when the ambulance got there, even though he was in a lot of pain.

“It was quite strong.

A lot of nice folks stopped and ran to the officer.

I believe there were five of us down there before the police and ambulance arrived.

People in the area stated that dozens of cars were speeding to the site as a large police and emergency response team arrived at the airport.

Just before a news conference at 4:30 PM, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear briefed the press about the deaths of Gumm and Combs.

Governor Beshear asked the public to pray for the people who were hurt by these pointless acts of violence. “And let’s be thankful for how quickly the Kentucky State Police and Lexington Police came to help.”

Linda Gorton, the mayor of Lexington, was just as shocked and devastated as everyone else in the town.

“Today, a terrible shooting happened in our area, and many people were killed or maimed. A lot of other communities throughout the country are going through the same thing.

According to Mayor Gorton’s report, a state police officer was also hurt.

She also promised that “the agencies will work together to fully investigate this tragedy” to illustrate how well state and municipal police work together.

Local police worked on the first crime scene on Sunday night, so section of Terminal Drive near the airport stayed closed.

The airport’s flights and operations returned to normal.

Police set up a barrier around a blue Nissan that they thought was the shooter’s first automobile as part of the inquiry.

Lexington Police also went to another shooting at 3:49 AM on Sunday, which added to the bloodshed of the day.

Two men drove themselves to the hospital, and a woman may have died from her injuries. This happened on Winchester Road near Liberty Road, which is on the other side of town from the airport.

The police still don’t know if this gunshot before dawn is linked to the subsequent rampage at the airport and church.

It was also a terrible day in Kentucky on Sunday when another shooting happened near the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, where the Run 4 the Roses basketball tournament was going on.

The police are still probing into the gunshots that happened at the church and the airport in Lexington.

The police are seeking to find out why the gunman did what he did, what church he might have gone to, and the complete line of events that led to the deaths of Christina Combs and Beverly Gumm. They are also praying for the injured churchgoers and trooper to get better.

The inhabitants of Lexington are sad and looking for answers after something dreadful happened.
