New Study Explores a Possible Link to ADHD

Posted on April 17, 2025

Millions of children suffer with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, a chronic illness. It frequently persists throughout maturity. ADHD encompasses a variety of emerging issues. These may include being impulsive, energetic, and having trouble focusing.

Types of ADHD
Healthcare professionals identify four forms of ADHD in both adults and children:

Inattentive ADHD: This includes trouble focusing, completing assignments, and maintaining a schedule. You have little to no symptoms of hyperactivity if you have this type.
Those with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD have trouble staying still or finding “quiet time.” You are very talkative and full of enthusiasm.
The most prevalent form of ADHD is combined presentation, which is also how most people associate the disorder. You exhibit a lot of signs of being preoccupied and impulsive and energetic.
Unspecified presentation: This occurs when you have excruciating symptoms that interfere with day-to-day functioning but do not meet the formal requirements for the aforementioned kinds.

Symptoms of ADHD

There are two major categories of ADHD symptoms:

Symptoms of inattention: These symptoms impair your capacity to focus and complete a task through to completion. You may turn down activities that call for concentration. Additionally, you could lose things easily and come across as unfocused while someone is speaking to you.

Symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity might make it difficult to sit quietly or feel at ease in one spot. Additionally, you could find it difficult to wait for your turn to speak or take action.

Causes of ADHD
Although the exact etiology of ADHD is unknown, a mix of environmental and genetic factors are thought to be responsible. ADHD frequently runs in families, so genetics is important, but other variables like exposure to the environment and the structure and function of the brain also play a part.

Factors related to genetics:

It has been found that ADHD is largely heritable, which means that families typically inherit it.
Although certain genes have been linked to ADHD, no single gene or combination of genes has been found as the only cause.
Research on identical twins indicates a greater concordance rate, suggesting a significant genetic component.

Environmental Aspects:
Prenatal variables: Pregnancy-related exposure to pollutants like as alcohol, nicotine, or lead can increase the chance of ADHD.
Low birth weight and prematurity are also linked to a higher chance of developing ADHD.
Brain traumas: People with severe brain injuries may occasionally develop ADHD.
Other aspects: Scientists are still learning about the importance of social settings and nutrition, among other environmental factors.

Structure and Function of the Brain:

The structure and function of the brains of people with ADHD differ from those of people without the disorder.
Studies reveal distinct patterns of brain activity during particular tasks, as well as decreased gray and white matter volume in particular brain regions.

In ADHD, the cerebellar vermis, caudate nucleus, and frontal lobes are especially impacted.

Additional Contributing Elements:
Sleep deprivation: In adults in particular, sleep deprivation can exacerbate symptoms of ADHD.

Depression and anxiety: ADHD symptoms may worsen if co-occurring mental health disorders are present.

Stimulant medicine: Some people may find that taking stimulant medication makes their symptoms worse.

In conclusion, brain variations are a major element in the development and presentation of ADHD, which is caused by a combination of environmental and hereditary variables.
