An Easy Way to Support Pollinators—and Add Charm to Your Yard

Posted on August 27, 2025

You may have witnessed bees buzzing over your garden or a local park, moving from blossom to flower. Because they work hard to pollinate the plants we need for food and beauty, their small bodies are covered in pollen. But have you ever thought about how the bees get their water? Like all living things, bees need water to stay alive. But cities are growing, there is a drought, and temperatures are rising. This means that natural water supplies like puddles and streams are diminishing, which makes it harder for bees to find safe places to drink. A “bee bar,” or bee watering station, is a simple and cheap way to aid.

A bee watering station is a shallow, safe place for bees and other helpful bugs to land and drink without the risk of drowning. There are small items like pebbles or stones that protrude up above the waterline on a bee bar. This gives bees a place to relax as they drink. This design is different from deep birdbaths or open bowls that don’t give bees a safe place to stand. It’s a small thing, but it might mean a lot, especially in the summer or fall when it’s hard to get water.

Making a bee bar is straightforward, cheap, and surprisingly fun. Most people already have everything they need at home. A clay plant saucer, an old pie tin, or even a plastic food cover that you’ve used before are all wonderful choices for a container that is shallow, wide, and durable. The most important thing is to keep away from things that are too deep or too light and might topple over. Next, add some pretty pebbles, glass marbles, or smooth stones to the bottom of the jar. Not only do these give bees a place to rest when they’re thirsty, but they also reflect sunlight, which draws pollinators from nearby places. You may turn your bee bar into a helpful garden decoration by painting the base, changing the colors, or even gluing stones together in interesting ways.

When your container is filled, add more clean water until it just covers the tops of the marbles or stones. The water level should be low enough so that the bees can stand on it without getting wet. They’ll sit on the rocks and drink from the little ponds that form between them. That’s all there is to it.

Making the bee bar is just as crucial as putting it in the right place. Find a bright, quiet place where bees are already working, like a vegetable garden or a flower garden. The sun warms up the water, which bees like. Your bee companions will already be there if you are near flowers. Place the water station on tree stumps, garden tables, or tall planters so that pets and small children can’t get to it. Sheltered locations in your yard could help reduce the wind and evaporation to a minimum.

It’s easy to take care of, but it’s crucial. Like any other source of water, bee bars need to be maintained clean. Change the water every few days to stop algae, bacteria, and mosquito larvae from forming. If you observe any buildup, wash the marbles or stones and scrub the container every now and again. When it’s particularly hot, check the water every day because it could dry out quickly. During the winter or in regions where it freezes, put the bee bar inside so it doesn’t break or become dangerous.

There are a lot of unexpected benefits for gardeners and environment lovers when they make a bee watering station, in addition to the obvious ones for pollinators. One reason is because it’s not hard to do. It’s a great thing for people of all ages and ability levels to do, especially elderly people who want to help animals without putting too much stress on themselves. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on tools, dig, or lift. It can also help you relax and allow your mind wander. You may paint the dish, try with different colors of stone, or even put a little plant around it. All of these are great methods to show off who you are. It’s a good way for families to teach youngsters about how important pollinators are and how individuals can help or destroy ecosystems.

And then there’s the excitement of just watching. You might see more than just honeybees when you put up the bee bar. Your little shelter might also be home to butterflies, ladybugs, and other small animals. You might start to like seeing a bee stop to drink, its wings shining in the sun. This might help you feel peaceful, connected, and like you have a goal. It shows us that even small things may have a great effect.

Bees and other pollinators are dying all around the world because their homes are being destroyed, pesticides are being used, and the weather is changing. Big problems need big solutions, but little, local efforts are just as crucial. Giving pollinators a clean, safe place to drink is one of the easiest and best things people can do to help them. The impacts go beyond just your garden. Bees that are healthy help crops grow and make the food chain stronger.

The next time you have a nice afternoon in your yard, take a few minutes to help someone else. Place some stones or marbles in a bowl of water. After that, place it in the sun. Soon, small guests will stop by to thank you for helping them and have a drink. It might not seem like much, but it could mean a lot to the bees.

One plate. A few stones. A single drop of water. And just like that, you’ve made your outdoor space a secure place that is full of life, beauty, and purpose, one soft landing at a time.
