The Surprising Reason to Keep a Spoon in Your Freezer

Posted on August 6, 2025

I used to think that spoons were only for eating or, at worst, for tapping on a plate to get someone’s attention at dinner.

I completely changed my mind when my neighbor opened her freezer and pulled out a solid frozen spoon.

Of course, I asked her what it was for. She smiled and said, “This little trick may sound strange, but believe me, it will change the game.” “Thanks later.”

But she was right. I always keep a spoon in the freezer now that I’ve tried it myself. Why? This simple gadget has a number of surprisingly beneficial purposes, like treating health problems and coming up with smart methods to fix things around the house.

Why do you need to freeze a spoon?
This household trick has a lot of unexpected benefits. Here are some smart ways to use a frozen spoon every day:

1. Get rid of headaches and migraines straight quickly.
A chilly spoon might help alleviate migraines and tension headaches.

What to do:

Put the ice spoon against your temples or the back of your neck.
Take it out after 5 to 10 minutes.
The cold helps with inflammation and relieves pressure. To make the effect last longer, swap between two frozen spoons.

2. Get rid of puffy eyes and dark circles.

It’s after dark? Are you not getting enough sleep? Don’t spend a lot of money on treatments if your eyes look tired. Try this easy repair instead.

How to utilize it:

Gently place a cold spoon on your closed eyes or under your eyes.
Put some pressure on it and hold it for a few minutes.
The cold makes your eyes look fresh by increasing blood flow and reducing swelling.

After soaking the spoon in chamomile tea, freeze it for even more calming effects.

3. Get hot liquids to cool down rapidly.

Do you want your coffee or tea to cool down quickly? A frozen spoon works like magic and won’t make your drink watery.

This is how it goes:

Just put the frozen spoon in your hot drink.
Stir for a few seconds, and you’ll have a warm drinkable temperature straight immediately.
You may also use this procedure for hot soup, which is a plus.

4. Remove stuck chewing gum from fabric

Is there gum on your clothes or the seats of your car? Don’t panic or use harsh cleaners.

Instead:

Put a frozen spoon directly on the gum.
Give the gum a few minutes to harden.
Take it off carefully; the fabric won’t be hurt.
Use the rounded edge of the spoon to carefully scrape it off if it won’t come off.

5. Check to see if your freezer is damaged while you’re away.
This might be the best use of all. Your food could go bad if the power goes off while you’re not home.

To keep your food safe:

Fill a cup with water and freeze it all the way through.
Put a spoon on top of the ice.
If the power goes off and the ice melts, the spoon will sink. The spoon won’t be on top anymore when the freezer comes back on and everything freezes again. If you came back and discovered the spoon inside or at the bottom, you would know that someone had messed with the contents.

Tip: Do this before you go on vacation or during hurricane season.

Final Thoughts
A frozen spoon can help with a lot of things, such headaches, sleepy eyes, making drinks taste better faster, and even letting you know when your freezer is about to break.

I usually keep at least one spoon in the freezer now that I know this. You might be surprised at how often it helps if you try it yourself. Just like I did, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it.
