His friend, actor Matthew Modine, told him to send an audition tape to the famous filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, which led to his big break. At the time, Kubrick sought actors for Full Metal Jacket who were committed to giving their utmost, both intellectually and physically. D’Onofrio was 6’3″, athletic, and fit at the time. He didn’t look anything like the overweight and mentally ill Marine recruit that Kubrick had in mind. But Kubrick sensed something in him and asked if he would be prepared to put on weight for the role. D’Onofrio said yes.
What happened next was a huge change. D’Onofrio gained 70 to 80 pounds, which was the greatest weight any actor had ever gained for a part at the time. His body weight went from 200 to 280 pounds. He also had to cut off his black, thick, curly hair, which was a big part of how he looked. These changes were more than just physical; they changed how people treated him. D’Onofrio has said in interviews that people, especially ladies, regarded him differently following the movie. “Most of the time, I was looking at women’s backs as they fled away.
