On a peaceful Sunday morning, Officer Janet and her K9 partner Max came to the park’s parking lot for their regular walk-through.
They didn’t expect they would have to deal with any pressing problems because it was still early in the day and the whole city seemed to be asleep.
Officer Janet and her K9 didn’t see many people, but then they heard a boy screaming.
She turned around and noticed a small child, no more than five years old, standing at the schoolyard gate and holding on to the bars tightly.
Janet knew the kid was in trouble long before she got near to him since it wasn’t the scene she wanted to see.
“Hey, sweetie, Is everything all right? She asked.
The child didn’t want to answer at first. Then, he whispered something in a voice that was so light and faint that she couldn’t understand what he was trying to say.
It was evident that the kid was alone and there were no grownups around.
Max, who had been taught to find and save people, stayed attentive. He wasn’t particularly comfortable around kids, but this time he walked around the boy and then put his nose on the boy’s hand.
Max knew that something was off. He noticed the boy was upset, so he sat next to him and nudged his backpack with his nose to attempt to calm him down.
Max started barking after a time, as if he wanted his wife to tell the kid to talk.
“Sweetheart, you can tell me what’s wrong.” Janet said softly, “My friend Max and I are here to help you.”
The child began to cry even more loudly than before and screamed, “My mom won’t wake up!” I called her name, but she didn’t answer.
Officer Janet asked the boy if he knew where he lived and urged him to show her how to get there.
The boy nodded and started to walk, with Janet and Max right behind him. In the meantime, she asked for help, which may suggest that there was an emergency.
When they finally got to the boy’s house, they found his mother lying asleep in bed. At least she was still alive, even if it was faintly.
Doctors and nurses came straight away to aid. They indicated that even a short delay of just a few minutes may have killed the woman.
She had a diabetic episode while she was asleep, it turned out.
Max sensed there was more to the story than Janet thought when she thought the boy was gone. He knew he had to do something right away and spotted the signs of terror that saved a life that day.
