At home, viewers flocked to social media to express their reactions to the unexpected appearance.
In the Super Bowl final on Sunday, February 9, a lot happened. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22.
Even though it was just the focus of a well reported lawsuit, none other than Kendrick Lamar took the stage during the much-anticipated halftime show to perform his Grammy-winning song “Not Like Us,” which is a diss track about fellow rapper Drake.
Additionally, Serena Williams joined Lamar on stage during the performance, and fans have since flocked to social media to speculate about why she made such an unexpected appearance.
To put the beef in perspective, Drake sued Universal Music Group for harassment and defamation after the label released the diss track. His attorneys accused the label of starting a “campaign to create a viral hit” because Lamar, 37, calls the 38-year-old a “certified p**dophile,” a charge Drake has consistently refuted.
Lamar rapped, “Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one,” as people all over the world gasped. He did not, however, include the most contentious term, “p**dophile,” in the diss track.
“HE SAID THE F**KING VERSE???” a fan wrote on Twitter. “Oh, there’s a draught on the floor.”
As another person put it: “Kendrick really out here calling out Drake at the Super Bowl.”
Another added, “Kendrick Lamar is cooking Drake in front of the world at the Super Bowl right now.”
A fourth person said, “Lmaoooooo the way he looked at the camera before that ‘hey Drake’.”
The cameo appearance of Williams, a fellow Compton native who is said to have dated Drake briefly in 2011, also prompted viewers at home to offer their thoughts, according to People.
Lamar was performing ‘Not Like Us’ when the 43-year-old tennis legend was spotted dancing.
“Drake watching Serena his ex crip walking to a viral diss song about him that’s legendary,” commented a person on X.
Another gushed: “OK I lied SERENA WILLIAMS doing a CRIP WALK on Drake’s tomb (this performance) was THE BEST thing I’ve ever seen.”
“SERENA CRIP WALKING ON DRAKE LMAOOOOOOOO,” a third person said.
A fourth person added, “SERENA???? Did Kendrick not like us because he had the serena Williams crip walking? IS THIS THE SERENA WHO DATED DRAKE? He is a diabolical man.
“I love you @taylorswift13 don’t listen to those booo!!” was one of Williams’ tweets during the Super Bowl shenanigans to defend Taylor Swift from the jeering audience.
