A lot of people used to get the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) to acquire an hourglass figure, but now it’s getting a lot of bad press due of a side effect that is so severe that it’s turning attention for all the wrong reasons.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says that buttock augmentation procedures have become highly popular in the last 10 years, in part because of celebrities and influencers like Kim Kardashian and Cardi B.
BBLs take fat from one place of the body and move it to the buttocks to make them larger and more contoured. Doctors are stressing the importance of thorough post-op preparation as the surgery grows more popular. This includes training patients how to care for their wounds and helping them keep clean.
But a lot of people who want to be famous for having surgery don’t talk about what really happens during the procedure.
The smell of BBL
There are thousands of polished, shiny, and happy BBL transformation videos on social media. But they don’t illustrate what it’s really like to recover, which includes sponge baths, cleaning wounds, limited movement, and being embarrassed by smells.
GetSnatched, a cosmetic surgery practice in Miami, says that customers are typically surprised by an unanticipated side effect: a strange scent that is often musty. “This is a normal and usually harmless part of the healing process, but it can make recovery more stressful or confusing.”
According to the clinic’s website, patients usually can’t sit, shower, or get to their backsides after a BBL because of swelling, pain, or just the way things are set up. When you wear compression clothing, bandages, and sweat, they can smell bad.
“Smell is real.”
Dr. Eric Anderson, a plastic surgery reconstructive surgeon in Chicago, told the Daily Mail that “the BBL smell is real.” He claimed this is due of big difficulties that happened after the procedure, like tissue death and not being clean enough.
“Fat necrosis” is one complication that might emerge following BBLs. It happens when the fatty tissue in the buttocks dies following surgery. This is a symptom that the patient was given too much fat throughout the treatment.
The doctor said, “When there is more fat in an area than the blood supply can handle, the fat will die in a smelly process called fat necrosis.” This can cause infections that necessitate antibiotics, hospital stays, and even sepsis.
Getting to the back
But the stench could also be because things are dirty.
Dr. Roger Tsai, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, explains that after a BBL, it could be hard for patients to reach around their bigger buttocks after using the bathroom. This might make them smell awful.
Tsai said to the Daily Mail, “It’s going to be a lot harder to wipe down there because there’s more to reach around.”
“Attack on my nose”
One TikToker, on the other hand, sounded the alarm on social media after going out with a lady who had had a BBL. “Her body looks insane…” She did it right. “Her whole body looked amazing,” he said to start the popular video “BBLs do be smelling.”
The person, who has 4.1 million likes, then added that things went bad when he arrived home with the woman and she started twerking with her new butt.
“I was like, “What the hell?” [Because] she doesn’t have anything on at the moment. And I could smell something, and it hit my nose. He said, “an attack on my nose.”
The TikToker then tried to be nice and told her that she “wasn’t smelling that fresh down there” and told her to “get into the shower” and “freshen up.”
I knew that it wasn’t usual for someone to have a normal-sized butt their whole life and then have a big BBL. You know, to really clean back there? And if they don’t do that regularly, they might not know that you sweat in a different way. He explains, “Adding that much more meat back then changes everything.”
“BBL smells bad.”
Another social media influencer said she had the treatment redone because her “sit down” smelled “really, really bad,” even though she said it wasn’t because it was dirty.

“BBL stinks, do you hear me?” she informed her followers on TikTok. She added the bad smells didn’t come from either of her holes, but from the “incisions that they inject the fluid and the fat in your butt.”
“And if it’s not healing right and your body doesn’t want it, the [incisions] will stay open and the drainage will keep going…” The woman, who had a BBL for only one year, said, “It will make your underwear, linens, and everything else smell bad.”
