Memorial Day Heartbreak: Ohio Deputy Killed During Domestic Call

Posted on June 2, 2025

When Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer was killed in May 2025 during a domestic incident in Morrow County, it was greatly saddening to people and leaders throughout the state.

When officers went to a domestic case in Morrow County, they found that Deputy Sherrer, at the age of 31, had been shot and killed. When they heard gunshots, the situation became a life-threatening one which is common for officers dealing with reports like these. Even with the best medical care, Sherrer died in the hospital shortly after the blast, the officials said.

The suspect, who is yet to be identified by the police, suffered hurt and is at present being treated critically in the hospital.

The department’s Facebook page shared a message from Sheriff Hinton that expressed there is no way to fully explain the hard feelings of the office. It details how so many people in Morrow County and the surrounding area still face serious hardship.

Since May 16, 2021, he was an employee of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. Because of his dedication and professionalism, his colleagues quickly appreciated and respected him. Many of his old colleagues and friends continue to remember the difference he made by aiding others and living a giving life.

After the shooting, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) began investigating it. While searching a house in Middletown, a police officer killed a person in yet another tragic case BCI is currently reviewing.

Ohio’s attorney general, Dave Yost, issued a letter explaining how much it hurts the state to lose yet another officer in law enforcement. Another Ohio police officer’s life has been lost and I am very sad about it. Honestly, I will always be grateful to anyone who offers help and risks their own lives,” Yost continued.

There has been a lot of attention from the state on this case and people and politicians are offering their support and empathy. In a social media post, Bernie Moreno called Deputy Sherrer’s passing “devastating.” I am profoundly grateful for our law enforcement officers in Ohio and I am praying for Deputy Daniel Sherrer’s family and everyone in the community, as he posted on X (previously Twitter).

To remember Sherrer, several residents around Marengo and close by have been holding vigils and leaving memorials at the sheriff’s office.

It shows how dangerous the job of policework can be on any given day. It adds more sorrow to the incident that it took place on the national holiday for veterans.

The major purpose is to assist Deputy Sherrer’s family, our fellow deputies and the community while further investigation takes place. Later this week, memorial services and funeral arragements will likely be shared with the public.

Following a police career, Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer died while serving. His courage, devotion and generosity will never be forgotten.
