Refresh Routine: What Works and What’s a Waste of Time?

Posted on June 1, 2025

Since we live in a hectic world, it is often easy to put aside regular cleaning and upkeep of our everyday belongings. Some people do not realize how important it is to clean or replace their usual household things which may bring about less comfort, poor hygiene and health dangers. Applying the perfect schedule for cleaning certain items can boost your well-being and help you live in a cleaner home.

There is a schedule for refreshing your bedding and air filters that depends on what they are. This guide shows you how often you should replace or clean things in your home to maintain cleanliness and health at home.

1. Change your bedding every week.
You should wash both your sheets and your pillowcases every week with laundry. Because they tend to contain sweat, skin oil and dead skin, they become good places for dust mites. Washing your sheets in hot water above 130°F (54°C) may destroy dust mites and get rid of allergens. Getting new bedding often improves your hygiene and helps you sleep soundly.

2. Towels: Change Each 3 Days
Towels are often damp and are used daily which makes them a common place for bacteria to grow. Washing your bath towels at least every three days will keep bacteria and mold from developing. Always use hot water and a good detergent to make sure they are very clean. Since hand towels are used more, they may have to be changed more often, mainly when several people share a bathroom.

3. Environment: Replace Curtains at Least Every 6 Months
When air circulates in the house by opening the windows, dust, allergens and odors can build up in the curtains. For a clean and nice home, clean your curtains every six months. Gently wash machine washable curtains on a cold cycle to protect them from shrinking. Professional cleaning could be the best choice for delicate or heavier types of linens.

4. Buttons and Webbing: Replace Every 3 to 5 Years
Pillows may contain dust mites, mold and bacteria which can influence your sleep and health. For good hygiene, you should get new pillows about every one to two years, based on their material and how much they are used. Washing your pillows after three or six months helps in keeping their freshness. Follow the recommendations, because some of these pillows need to be washed in the machine while others require spot cleaning.

5. Your toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months.
Toothbrushes are needed for good dental care, but you should replace them often as the bristles wear down. Dental professionals usually advise people to get a new toothbrush every three months or more often if the bristles wear out. Using a new toothbrush is important if you don’t want to catch your illness again.

6. Clean the Kitchen Sponges Every Week
Due to being used near food and water, kitchen sponges tend to collect lots of bacteria. Replacing your kitchen sponge every week will help stop the spread of germs. Between replacements, put the sponges in the microwave for one minute or soak them in bleach for five minutes to clean them.

7. Replacing Air Filters: Every 3 Month
The air in your home is cleaned and protected by the air filters in your HVAC system. When pollen, dust and sticking particles build up on them, they are less capable of dealing with air. It is best to change your air filters every three months, though you should do it more often if you have pets or allergies. Routine changing of filters helps the system work smoothly and save energy.

8. Refresh all your makeup brushes every month.
Oils, bacteria and old makeup on brushes may cause the skin to become irritated or develop breakouts. Healthy skin requires you to clean your makeup brushes at least once each month. Wash them with either a gentle brush cleanser or by mixing mild soap with water and then permit them to air dry.

9. Plan to do a thorough refrigerator clean every 3 months.
Storing food in the refrigerator is important and cleaning it regularly helps keep food safe. A thorough cleaning every three months will get rid of accidental spills, old or stale food and strong odors. Begin by removing everything from the fridge and afterward clean both the shelves and drawers with warm and soapy water. Always clean both the door seals and the outside part of the door.

10. Smoke Detectors: Test Each Month and Exchange the Batteries Annually
Smoke detectors protect us at home and it is necessary to test them to be sure they work. Monthly, push the test button on the smoke detectors to make sure they are still working. Each year, remove the batteries and replace them with new ones or replace them instantly if you hear the chirping. Every 10 years, you should think about changing the entire smoke detector.

11. Every 6 months, remember to refresh your Brita water filters for fresh water every time you fill.
Water filters clean your tap water and help it taste better. Contaminants can build up in them over time which lowers their effectiveness. For clean and safe drinking water, you should switch out your water filters about every six months or from the manufacturer’s recommendations. This relates to filters in refrigerators as well as those in dedicated water filtration systems.
