Trump Opens Up About His Father’s Health and His Own Fears

Posted on May 28, 2025

Compared to many other political figures, Donald Trump is unusually subject himself to his father’s fate of struggling with cognitive decline.

In the program’s second episode, Timothy L. O’Brien, from Bloomberg Opinion, discussed Trump’s recent call for a third term as president, something the U.S. Constitution forbids.

O’Brien, a Trump observer, explained that while the former president’s actions show he loves to promote himself or save himself, he doubts Trump would try for another term despite seeming to want one.

O’Brien said with a chuckle, “He wants to reach his 300th birthday.” And he’d probably want to hold the office for 200 of those years.

Even so, the passing of time is undeniable for Trump at age 78. The thing that stood out to O’Brien in the clip was that Donald Trump seems so much older these days. People will say a third term is unlikely and they are right about voters and the 22nd Amendment, but they are also forgetting that he turns 79 in June.

Even though the Constitution limits presidents to two terms, O’Brien says mental health concerns due to Trump’s reported fear of mental decline are much more important, according to The Washington Post.

He is afraid that facing dementia now, like his father, will lead to Alzheimer’s in the future,” he said. “This is something he’s had to deal with for many years.”

At the age of 93, Fred Trump, a successful developer, passed away in 1999 after years with Alzheimer’s. Although the dementia was diagnosed in 1991, he was still working actively through much of his decline. Every workday, Brandon would come to the studio until he was taken to the hospital, according to family friend Richard Levy.

According to O’Brien, Trump has mostly avoided the topic as it can pose a political risk. Because he has frequently mocked former President Biden’s mental abilities, any public statement about his own concerns seems complicated. O’Brien however clarified that Trump’s closest companions have picked up on the changes.

Obrien said, “His delivery, stance and overall energy now are very different than how Trump appeared back then.” “How much interest in the job still exists in him, given that’s what prevents him from being locked up?”

Last year, People also interviewed Fred C. Trump III, who said witnessing Donald’s behavior made him feel as though he’s experienced the same kind of mental decline before.

Fred, 61, said, “Of course, I’ve seen the way things are changing.” I notice it happening in much the same manner as my grandfather did. Anyone who says the Trump family doesn’t have dementia must be ignoring the truth.
