JonBenét Ramsey’s Father Reflects on Her Case After Nearly Three Decades

Posted on May 22, 2025

Two decades after JonBenét’s death, John Ramsey said a masked intruder might be responsible for JonBenét’s murder.

About 27 years after JonBenét Ramsey’s mysterious and terrible murder, her father, John Ramsey, has said something that could draw attention to the case again and influence its future. During his interview with People, John said he thought there might be a connection between his daughter’s murder and a crime against a young girl in Boulder, Colorado which happened just nine months later.

John Ramsey thinks it is impossible to overlook how much the cases have in common. He believes there could be a serial predator, dressed in a mask, who carried out both attacks. “I think the clues could have clearly led to the same man,” John said, adding that investigators shouldn’t have rejected this thinking.

His statements are crucial, because they identify problems with the first evidence and suggest that another investigation with modern DNA tools should be done. Thanks to advancements, we are able to see new insights when reviewing the evidence, said John.

The incident that puzzled America for years
JonBenét Ramsey, a child pageant winner, died in the basement of her home in Boulder on December 26, 1996. She suffered terrible injuries, was choked and may have been sexually assaulted too. Seeing a ransom note made everyone present increase their suspicion.

At the start of things, attention from the public and police focused on the Ramsey family. Because the crime didn’t appear in a typical burglary way, the content of the ransom note was unusual and JonBenét was known for her pageants, many people started to form theories. The press coverage never stopped. Because of their crash, John, Patsy and Burke received a lot of intense media scrutiny.

Many people questioned the Ramsey family, despite the fact that they regularly denied involvement and the evidence was full of contradictions. None of the suspects were formally accused of any crime. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006, even while continuing her fight for justice for JonBenet.

Did We Miss a Chance for Change?
About a year after JonBenét’s death, a community in Boulder was also attacked in a way that sounds very similar to John Ramsey’s latest assertion. A girl age 12, living not far from the Ramseys, was said to have been assaulted in her house by someone in a mask. Not only were they neighbors, but they also went to the same dance studio and mixed in similar groups.

“It wasn’t just lucky chance,” John continued to say. These girls lived their lives together.” All of them were targeted with similar methods. How could this not have led to further inquiry?

He declares that, despite the many similarities, the experts of his day refused to follow up on the idea of a connection. As a result, McQuade believes the failure to catch the individual could have let a dangerous suspect go.

John wants law enforcement agencies to use newer forensic tools to study both of the incidents again. He notes that developments in DNA technology since the 1990s may now mean preserved evidence could provide additional information.

The Author Recommends an End and a Path Forward
John Ramsey has spent nearly 30 years grieving and trying to find justice not only for his family, but for everyone touched by similar crimes. This renewed request for action comes as families of cold case victims are increasingly trying science and gaining attention for their cases.

He felt that for far too long, the government did not address the main issues. Let’s focus on what we will do next instead of remembering what happened before.

He asked that Boulder police make more information available, so that experts and private labs could review the case. Several experts have suggested re-examining the case, though legal and procedural issues have made it slow to happen.

Are We Getting Closer to Hope?
Nearly thirty years after JonBenét Ramsey’s death, her case is still a big emotional and cultural topic. There is no lack of documentaries, books and podcasts trying to explain what happened. John Ramsey’s recent statements might put the spotlight back on the evidence, science and truth.

Thanks to new DNA technology and a newer attitude toward cold cases, there is still a small chance to discover who murdered JonBenét. For John, without hope he would not keep going.

The family wants justice for JonBenét. And every instructor shares this experience.
