Sue Radford still feels the pain of Sophie Walker’s tragic passing, even seven years later. As the day arrived that Sophie had passed, Sue uploaded a picture on Instagram to remember her as someone “brave, kind-hearted, and funny.”
Wilms Tumor, a type of rare and aggressive kidney cancer, took Sophie Walker’s life when she was only seven years old. Even though her diagnosis happened in her teen years, Sophie courageously faced each day and touched the hearts of all those around her.
Sue Radford, who runs the country’s biggest family, has kept in contact with Sophie’s mother Rebecca. The relationship between them has only become stronger because of the time they have spent together, sharing their thoughts and emotions.
On May 15, Sue dedicated a touching message to her brother Newb (48).
“Our hearts are broken, Sophie. Of everyone I’ve met, you were the most courageous, fun, and considerate person I could have known. Your smile that lights up the room and your laughter that makes others smile will be gone. Make sure your family is well cared for and get yourself some rest, dear girl. I will always love you.”
Along with her post, Sue shared a photo of Sophie smiling — it reminded everyone just how much joy she brought to those who knew her, when she was sick.
Chloe, the daughter of both, spoke clearly about the pain they felt as a family:
“Very heartbreaking. What a brave, amazing girl. Words are absent. You are on my mind and I wish you lots of support and love.”
Sophie was also remembered by Sophia, Sue’s daughter, who said that she was:
A girl with the most beauty and courage. We have broken hearts.”
Thanks to their shared experience as mothers and endless help, Sue and Rebecca’s friendship has been very supportive over the years. Sue’s tribute to Sophie not only helped folks remember Sophie but also exemplified a very strong and lasting friendship that stays the same through hard days.
People will always remember and love Sophie because of the life she lived. Her tale has moved many people, mostly those who understand what it’s like to deal with childhood cancer and the toughness shown by families dealing with such a loss.
This disease, called Wilms Tumor or nephroblastoma, is uncommon in children. Although it can be treated in many occasions, its aggressiveness is higher when found in older children or teens. The focus on Sophie’s battle made many people aware of how important it is to study and raise awareness of this disease.
The same point was repeated in messages arriving from all over the United States: Sophie Walker lit up the community by her example. Her strength, positive attitude, and kindness stayed with all those close to her. Although Florence’s life ended too soon, the love she shared is still spreading around her.
Even though she is gone, Sue Radford and her family keep her love alive, showing the world that love never really fades.
