Two nuns were walking around a 7-11 on a sizzling summer day, with no hurry as they cruised up and down the aisles. One of them paused and looked at the other with the glint of the mischief in their eyes when they came to the beer cooler. “Wouldn’t a nice cool beer or two go down nice on a hot summer evening” she asked. The second nun giggled with evident temptation, but she hesitated. “Quite right it would, sister, but I would not like to go out and buy beer. I am sure that it would attract a scene at the checkout counter”.
With a wicked smile, the first nun brushed off her concern. “No problem,” she said and went to the cooler and picked up a six-pack without hesitating for a single second. Hand in hand, they made their way to the register and the beers held in their hands gained them more than a few curious looks. The cashier blinked back in surprise albeit evidently not anticipating to see two women in habits with alcohol.
Before he could even say something, the nun with the six pack bent closer and said, “We use beer for washing our hair. In our nunnery, we refer to it as Catholic shampoo”. The Cashier stopped for a second and reached under the counter smiling and pulled out a pack of pretzel sticks and plopped them into their bag along with the beer. He stared right in her face and said with a grin, “The curlers are on the house.”
The laughter in their unsuspected interchange hung in the air, and hung in the air when those moments arrive – reminiscent of that blend of faith, wit, and the kind of lark that reminds us joy comes in all sorts.
Not too far from that 7-11, in cold surroundings, yet another story came to play – one about a priest and a nun who found themselves miles away from any civilization and faced a blizzard. Having slogged in deep snow and cutting winds, they came across a small, solitary cabin. Exhausted and half-frozen, they went inside to find a small stack of blankets, a sleeping bag and one bed.
What a gentleman he was, the priest couldn’t help but lap up to the nun and say, “Sister, you sleep in the bed”. I’ll sleep the floor in the sleeping bag.” She nodded gratefully and curled up as he sat down on the cold floor. However, soon there was a piercing out cry of her voice, interrupting the silence. “Father, I’m cold.” With no second thought, the priest graciously stood up, carried a blanket, and with a lot of tenderness covered it over her as he got back into the sleeping bag.
As he was going to sleep again, he heard her voice again. ‘Dad, I am still very cold’. Responsibly, he got out, putting another blanket and coming back to his position on the floor. A few minutes later, when his eyes were at last closing, she whispered, “Father, I am sooooo cold”.
At this, the priest was on his feet, looked at her, and with a raised eyebrow, said, “Sister I have an idea. We are here in the wild out of anywhere and no one will ever know what has happened. Let’s pretend we’re married.”
The nun paused a moment before sweetly answering, “That is all right with me”.
To that the priest without batting an eyelid screamed “Okay then get up and get your bloody blanket for yourself!”
Sometimes, a little bit of humor, especially, the type, which is based on everyday situations or extreme peculiarities of life, can uplift the whole day. From the nuns having a beer run turned into a comedic routine to a priest and nun surviving a snowstorm because of the surprise of a marriage joke, these stories remind us of how there is joy to laughter, surprise and of shared human moments.
