Sleeping Positions Can Say a Lot About a Relationship – Here’s One to Watch

Posted on May 12, 2025

There are several key factors for maintaining good health that health experts all agree upon that is rest.
Sleeping well (between seven and nine hours each night) can give the body the repair and recovery it requires in order to function correctly.

Lack of enough rest has a number of health risks including stroke, high appetite, which may cause obesity, diabetes, and bone deterioration and even heart attacks.

Experts have seen it fit to give their autograph concerning sleeping with a partner and have mentioned some benefits like; stress reduction, well-being improvement, low insomnia and temperature regulation among others.

There are certain benefits of sleeping with your partner, including stress reduction, better coexistence, fewer insomnia cases, and temperature regulation among other.

As for sleeping position, the same has also been investigated.

Lately, American psychologist Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire, in the UK, has made a study that specified the importance of sleeping position and distance if sleeping together with your partner.

According the study, as many as 42% of couples sleep with backs turned to each other, 34% are in contact with each other in some form and 31% sleep on the same side during the night.

Similarly, it was reported that the more they were the closer the sleeping couple was, the more happiness and satisfaction they had. Regardless of not meeting physically, sleeping on the same side speaks volumes about their connection to their partner.

Thus, if your partner puts his back to you while sleeping this is also a sign, that he/she respect your independence while not forgetting to care about the existing loving connection.

However, this is not definitive on whether a given relationship is good or bad because in addition to sleeping behaviors there are other aspects of living together that define a state of a relationship.

The findings were that the most couples (42%) sleep back to back, that another third have some form of contact and that more than a third of the couples sleep on the same side of the bed from nightfall onwards.

Psychologically, any small movement tells a lot about any relationship. Night time postures which are usually passed on take time to notice but show emotional conditions and thoughts. But it’s important not to make early conclusions. The reason why we sleep the way we do may be related to many things, physical or just plain old habits formed since childhood.

As an expert in relationships and psychology compared your partner’s decision to turn their backs to you while sleeping can take different forms which are worth understanding.

Quality of a Relationship depending on a Position during Sleep
In 2014, a group of scientists from the University of Hertfordshire did not find anything better to do than to perform a study during the Edinburgh International Science Festival to find out whether or not sleeping positions may on some grounds be indicative of the quality of a relationship.

Research: What is it to Sleep On Your Back?

In analyzing the data the researchers came to conclusion that when a couple decides to sleep on their backs or without regular physical contact with each other, such decisions demonstrate deep trust and comfort.

This position implies both partners respect their separate space in relation to each other and completely trust each other’s love.

However, despite its vitality, there is none the saying that physical contact is the decisive factor of satisfaction or happiness in a relationship according to the survey findings.

That means, some couples may opt for sleeping in such ways which are not associated with direct physical contact, but they are not far from the emotional closeness that would reflect the love and trust to each other.
