As the first American pope ever, born in the U.S., Pope Leo is caving an enduring impression for the entire world.
After his first mass as a Pope Leo who was the very first American Pope spoke in English to the congregation and the same response can be heard all over the world.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who later became Pope Leo, was selected as the 267th pope on Thursday (8 May) and residents have quickly resorted to social media to comment on his Chicago accent during his inaugural speech as new Bishop of Rome.
Not much later, the world heard the 69 year old American’s singing voice in the mass this morning but his accent was blatantly not what expected and a surprise for many.
One X user penned: Speaking English, the new Pope has unmistakable American twang. What a jolt for me.”
A second chimed in: The Pope decides to make his speech in English which is pronounced with an inescapable American accent.
The fact that the pope is speaking in American accent appears to be the reason why I burst with amusement for some reason. A third person laughed and said, “It just doesn’t feel right that there is an American Pope.”
A fourth declared: Some believe that it is impossible to be Pope with an American accent.
“Having a Pope whose accent is a bit American is actually quite interesting, culturally,” said a fifth person, and another user agreed: “It definitely adds an interesting wrinkle on the American Pope idea from a cultural perspective.” It just doesn’t sit well with me if a Pope talks with an American accent.
A final X customer jumped in. To me, having a Pope read Latin with an American accent is just not merits. It’s horrible.”
Newish head of the Roman Catholic Church is seen as a person who is somewhat leaning to the side of moderation, in matters of modern catholic teachings.
Likewise, he is very close to his predecessor with regards to his lobbying for migrant and poor people’s support and made known his opposition to Donald Trump’s immigration strategy before.
He re-tweeted an offensive tweet regarding the criticisms of the US president which said:<< It is not in the least Christian and not American, and morally unjustifiable to separate children from their parents and put them into cages. It was done through our name and we carry the communal shame for it.
Less than a day after the start of the new papal election, the College of Cardinals appointed the successor to late Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday (21 April).
Before obtaining the apex of religious power, the newly elected Pope must receive a two-thirds vote in the 133-cardinal conclave in which they cast their votes in secrecy.
What are Pope Leo’s beliefs?
Immigration
It is said that the newly-picked pontiff chose a name associated with Pope Leo XIII’s strong conviction about social justice, during this time of huge change in the world, such as industrialization, increase in popularity of Marxism, and mass immigration.
LGBTQ+ community
In 2012, he objected to the entertainment media that sympathized with beliefs and practices opposed to the gospel such as the ’homosexual lifestyle’and ‘alternative families formed by same sex partners and adopted children’. It is not yet known to what degree his views have changed.
Poverty
The Order of St. Augustine was an Order he led before becoming Pope Leo, a monastic community that was dedicated to living ascetically, ministering to the poor, and did preach the faith.
It is claimed that the views of Pope Leo about poverty correspond to those of Pope Francis because when speaking to his clergy, he stressed on the Church’s teachings.
Donald Trump
It has been observed that old tweets raking the Trump’s behavior aspects were brought up, which means that the new pope engages in negative talks about Trump.
That year, the pope retweeted a very negative tweet from the head of the church in our diocese, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich: As much as he criticized the policy, he described it as a very inethical action which negates the standards of right and decency at the Christian and at the American school. These are in our face movements and we leave all to share the shame.
Women in the church
During a talk with Vatican News in 2023, Pope Leo said: I have seen many times that their input makes us understand better. The pontificate of Pope Leo will heighten curiosity for the manner in which the Church has handled women participation (given that Leo has endorsed the actions of the previous pontiff to still allow the women from the first time to participate in one of the Church’s armory Dicastery for Bishops).
Climate change
When it comes to climate change, Pope Leo stated last year that instead of words concrete activities ought to be undertaken.
