This week, Jimmy Fallon exhibited a very different side of himself. He was full of real emotion, pain, and love.
When you lose a pet, you’re not simply losing an animal; you’re saying goodbye to a family member who loved you no matter what. Whether you’re a famous person with millions of dollars in the bank or someone living on the streets with no money, your pet will love you unconditionally.

For example, Jimmy Fallon loved his family’s “first baby.”
On Tuesday, the host of the Tonight Show posted on Instagram that his family had lost their beloved golden retriever, Gary. He had been a part of their lives for more than 13 years and was a treasured friend.
In a very personal essay, Fallon talked about what Gary meant to their family. The first phrase expressed how heartbroken he was:
“She was the last name we wrote on every birthday card.”

From there, Fallon painted a moving picture of a dog who was more than just a pet.
“She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl, and a rebel.”
Along with his poignant words, there was a carousel of pictures illustrating Gary’s magnificent existence, from his exuberant puppy days to comfortable family times.
One picture showed Fallon lying next to her on a bright orange rug, and they were both totally calm. Another picture showed Gary with Fallon and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, and their daughters, all of whom were smiling and wearing flowers.
Met for the first time in 2017
Fallon said, “Franny, Winnie, Mommy, and I miss you so much.” He was talking about his kids, Franny, 10, and Winnie, 12, and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, 58. I can sense how empty the home is without you. It’s so silent that it hurts. That silence is slowly being filled with memories of you and laughter through the tears. Thanks for all the things you offered us. We miss you more than we can say. “Goodnight, Gary.”
Fallon remembered warmly how Gary would jump into the water right after a bath and then roll around on the grass “doing bunny kicks with her tongue sticking out.” He claimed that her happiness became the very essence of summer.
If she liked you, she would lean toward you and scratch you. “If” is a liberal word; she did this for almost everyone.

In 2017, Fallon told People how he met Gary for the first time when he was a puppy.
“She came on [Fallon’s late-night show] to do a bit. I believe she was a political commentator. He remembered that he was arguing with her and she was wearing a suit.
He also talked about when they will meet, adding,
“At the time, [Juvonen and I] were trying to have kids, so I think this was just something to keep us busy while we worked on that.”
A lot of affection from friends and fans
Fallon’s comment area quickly filled with kind words. Friends, celebrities, and animal lovers from all over the world sent their condolences.
Actress Chrissy Metz said:
“I’m so sorry for you and your family, Jimmy.” It seems like you all changed each other in wonderful ways. ✨🫶🏼
Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist, said:

Words from Heaven by Jane Goodall
Actress Cheri Oteri said something that many pet owners may relate to:
“I know what love and loss are, and I’m so sorry.” We only have them for a brief period, but they come to open our hearts.
And Jane Goodall’s story said, “Gary and Dr. Goodall will have great adventures together 🤍🌈🐾.”
Fans sent messages that said things like,
“Gary will always watch over all of his Fallon family with a smile ❤️
and
I am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. I loved viewing Gary’s clips over the years, especially during your Covid program. Thank you for letting us see Gary too. “🌈🐾❤️🩹💔
