A high-ranking police official has ruled out terrorism and gang activity as the cause of a shooting in Sydney’s inner west that harmed at least 16 people and fired up to 100 rounds.
Police were called to Croydon Park immediately on Sunday at about 7:45 p.m. because of reports of shooting. Cars were the only vehicles allowed on the roads.
Around 9:30 p.m., police arrested a guy in his early 60s in a building on Georges River Road and took his guns. There were 16 people who needed help from paramedics on the scene. Some were sent to the hospital, and one man is in bad condition.
Mal Lanyon, the Commissioner of Police in New South Wales, told 2GB on Monday that there was “no known link” between the shooting and terrorist groups or gangs.
“I’ve seen a lot of cops wear body cameras.” “He claimed, “They had to take cover while they tried to help individuals.”
“While the cops were there, there were repeated volleys of gunfire and vehicles were being shot at.
“On the body cam footage, you can see the police hiding and hear a lot of gunfire and hits not too far from the camera.”
People who saw it reported they heard gunfire close to a McDonald’s. A police car that came to the scene was one of the cars that were shot at.
According to the police, shots were fired from a building window while policemen were hurrying to the apartment complex.
There are photographs of paramedics helping someone on a stretcher at the scene.
Right now, tactical police are in Sydney’s inner west.
At 9:15 p.m., when tactical police had already arrived, more powerful explosions could be heard.
Stephen Parry, acting superintendent of the NSW Police, said that police who went to the apartment complex were shot at from a window of a building on Georges River Road.
He said the bullets just missed the officers and hit their police car instead.
Nick, the taxi driver, said he was nearby when the gunshots hit his car.
I heard a “bang, bang, bang” on the passenger side of the taxi as I drove by. I observed a few holes in the window when I looked next to me. “I didn’t even know there was a hole in the roof,” he said.
“I could smell the gunpowder, but I thought someone had set off firecrackers because it was the night of the big game.”
“I got close to the corner, but then I got scared because I kept hearing gunfire.” So I parked close to McDonald’s and realized that the shootings were true.
Paramedics helped 16 persons at the scene who had minor injuries. Two males were transferred to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment.
People have been ordered to “stay where they are.”
It is reported that the man shot at passing cars “indiscriminately” up to 100 times.
On Monday morning, there was a shooting at Croydon Park.
On Monday morning, the police take a car away from the scene of the shooting.
A representative from NSW Ambulance told the Daily Mail that a man in his 50s walked to Canterbury Hospital on his own with a gunshot wound.
The individual was then sent to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he was in very bad shape and had surgery that night.
As of Monday, he is still in terrible form.
After treating them, NSW Ambulance paramedics also took three more people with minor injuries to Canterbury Hospital.
Two other persons went to a nearby police station on their own with minor injuries, and one person was brought to a nearby hospital with injuries that have not yet been confirmed.
Pictures from the scene of the incident showed paramedics working on a patient on a stretcher.
Reports say that other automobiles, including a police car, were also damaged when they were shot at.
“The first shot hit the police while they were outside their car.” A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said, “They’ve safely and strategically retreated.”
Police tape sealed off a building in Sydney’s inner west on Sunday night after a gunshot.
After the incident, there was broken glass at a bus stop in Croydon Park.
Superintendent Parry said that the individual was shooting at cars that were driving by, even police cars.
Superintendent Parry recalled, “There may have been between 50 and 100 shots fired at the time.”
He was firing from a window in the building. He said, “That’s what we think.”
Trent King, the Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that the shooting was “almost unheard of in Sydney.”
Mr. King said the episode was “horrific” and that the cops still don’t know why it happened.
Mr. King told Today on Monday that “He used a high-caliber rifle for the incident as well.”
“Very, very sad.” That is clearly something that the investigators will look into starting today.
Mr. King said that the person shot at the cops when they got there.
A lot of roads are closed by the police.
According to NSW Ambulance, four people had to go to the hospital for different injuries.
There are still traffic closures in the area.
He added that the police hadn’t talked to the person yet, but they will do so at the right moment. They would ask him questions like where he acquired the rifle and bullets.
While the police were working, people were ordered to “shelter in place.” There were police helicopters and an armored Bearcat vehicle.
People in the area got a text message from the authorities urging them to stay indoors or find shelter.
Parts of Georges River Road and Brighton Avenue stayed closed until well after 11 p.m.
A police helicopter called Polair hovered over and warned those on the ground to stay inside.
A taxi driver who was passing through the area around 7:30 p.m. said he heard four loud explosions and smelled gunpowder, as if someone had set off fireworks.
He then looked over and saw that there were a lot of holes in the door, window, and roof of his car.
The officers from the public order and riot squad arrived there quickly.
People who lived there were frightened and checked up on friends and relatives on social media. People argued that Sydney isn’t safe because there had been so many shootings.
Authorities have set up a crime scene and told cars to stay away from the area and take other routes.
There is still an investigation going on to find out what transpired.
