Emergency Vehicle Crash Leaves 8 Injured — Infant Among Victims

Posted on October 1, 2025

Early Saturday morning in Dougherty County, Georgia, what started out as a normal emergency transfer turned into a nightmare when an ambulance from the county’s emergency medical services (EMS) toppled over at one of the busiest crossroads in the city. The tragedy happened soon after 7:00 a.m. at the corner of Monroe Street and Pine Avenue and hurt eight persons. One of the victims was a newborn.

Witnesses said the scene was “chaotic” and “gut-wrenching,” with the sound of metal crunching and the sight of an ambulance toppling over. There were a lot of cars involved, but it looked like the ambulance was the one that got hurt the most. People were anxious enough to notice that a medical transport van had been hit so hard that it was an indication of life-saving care and urgency. But what really scared a lot of people was finding out that there was a baby within.

Dougherty County EMS said that three qualified emergency medical workers were in the ambulance when the occurrence happened. They were bringing two patients, one of whom was a baby. There hasn’t been an official report on what happened before the accident, but it’s known that the ambulance had the right of way and its lights and sirens were on.

The crash was so bad that it flipped the ambulance over onto its side. This is an unusual but dangerous thing for a vehicle that is supposed to be strong and steady under pressure. The strong movement inside the rig not only put the patients in risk, but it also threw the EMS workers into the walls and equipment racks of the vehicle. A lot of people claimed it was a wonder that no one perished after that.

Emergency workers were there in a matter of minutes. There were more than one police unit, fire rescue squad, and ambulance that came to help with the problem. First responders started to get people who had been hurt out of the overturned ambulance and other cars that were part of the accident. Traffic was stopped in the area so that the scene could be used as a temporary triage site.

The baby was already on its way to the hospital when it was quickly taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for more tests. The doctors knew that the baby wasn’t hurt too badly, so they kept an eye on him just in case. Later that morning, doctors at the hospital said that the baby’s health was stable and not life-threatening. Family and community members felt better after hearing this news.

The EMS staff and the second patient were hurt in diverse ways, from scrapes and bruises to more serious ailments. They all hurried to nearby hospitals to get aid. County officials haven’t said who the victims are, but they do say that none of the injuries are likely to be life-threatening.

James Gibney, the head of Dougherty County EMS, lauded how swiftly his team and other agencies responded in a public statement later that day. “Getting a call that their own workers were in an accident while trying to help someone else is the worst thing that could happen to an EMS director.” We are happy that no one died and that everyone got help right away. Our teams followed orders to the letter.

Gibney also talked about how these kinds of events may be harsh on the feelings of first responders. “They do this job every day, putting their own lives on the line to help people they don’t know. You never would have believed that the road would be dangerous today. But they were still able to keep the patients safe and stay calm, even when things were at their worst.

The Georgia State Patrol is in charge of the official inquiry and is also seeking to find out what caused the incident. Officials are looking at traffic camera footage, talking to those who saw the accident, and checking the data from the cars to see if it was caused by a car not yielding to the ambulance, bad road conditions, a mechanical breakdown, or something else.

People who live nearby say that the crossroads of Monroe Street and Pine Avenue has been a problem for a long time, especially in the morning when it’s dark and drivers are in a hurry. Some people in the neighborhood have started to call for improved signs, more police on the roads, or even new designs to make things safer.

The event has brought up again how easy it is for emergency vehicles to get hit, even when they have lights, sirens, and the right of way. It’s a sobering reminder that quick decisions can mean the difference between life and death in high-stress traffic situations, not just for regular drivers but also for doctors and nurses who are under a lot of pressure to save lives.

The inquiry is still going on, but the community has come together to aid the EMS personnel and the families who were hurt. People from all over social media and church groups in the area have sent words of thanks and support. Some people from the community even brought thank-you cards to the hospital for the paramedics who were hurt.

It’s still not clear how long the EMS workers will need to rest or if any of them will have long-term problems. Their coworkers and department are helping them out and giving them emotional support right now.

Things might have been a lot worse, that’s for sure. Everyone is alive thanks to the EMS team’s skill, quick response, and a little bit of luck.

The baby, who was too little to know what had happened, left the hospital that weekend in good health. Family members held the baby near to their hearts to make sure they were secure again.

The ambulance that flipped over has been taken off the road so that it may be looked at and maybe fixed. It might never work again, but the people within it will, thank goodness.
