Health Officials Warn of Uncommon Symptoms Linked to New COVID Strains

Posted on October 1, 2025

Patients say their throats hurt so much that it seems like they are swallowing razor blades. These are becoming important indications of the new strains of Covid-19 that are proliferating in the UK and US. These versions are called Stratus (officially XFB) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1). They are slowly becoming the most popular type of strain. They aren’t more harmful than other strains of the virus, but they are spreading faster, and more people are falling sick as fall and winter draw closer.

Health experts are alarmed about how fast these diseases are spreading. Since August, the number of Covid cases in the UK and the US has virtually doubled, according to official figures. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that the ratio of positive tests rose climbed from 7.6% to 8.4% in just one week. The number of persons who went to the hospital because of Covid increased up from 2.0 to 2.73 per 100,000. This is a minor rise, but it’s concerning since the trend is headed in the wrong way as the weather becomes colder and respiratory viruses normally go up.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States reported that the levels of wastewater in the country, which are very important for tracking how the virus spreads in communities, are currently mostly at a “moderate” level. But four states have “very high” levels of viral activity, and the Northeast is witnessing some of the highest increases. Testing wastewater is becoming more important because fewer individuals are getting tested regularly, and official case counts don’t represent how widely the disease is spreading in the community anymore.

People are stating that Stratus and Nimbus have different signs and symptoms. Dr. Aaron Glatt, an infectious disease expert and hospital epidemiologist in the US, says that several of his recent Covid patients have told him they are in “severe pain—as if their throat is covered with razor blades.” He noted that sore throats aren’t new to Covid, but it appears like a lot of people are in more agony right now.

These strains also make it more probable that you will become sick with cold or flu symptoms, like

A nose that is runny or congested

A cough that won’t go away

Headache

Feeling tired

Muscle pain and discomfort

A small fever

These new strains spread swiftly and create major symptoms, but recent research shows that they don’t make people any sicker than previous forms of the virus. There are still a lot fewer people going to the hospital and the ICU than there were at the peak of the pandemic. There is no proof that the new strains are getting around vaccinations in a bad way, but they have changed genetically to spread more quickly, especially in closed, enclosed spaces.

Because the number of diseases is going up, health officials have started giving out shots for the fall and winter. The UK’s NHS is now giving out free Covid booster shots to:

People who are 75 years old or older

People whose immune systems don’t work properly

Pregnant women

People who live in nursing homes

Kids of a certain age

Some community pharmacies now sell a nasal spray that parents can use to keep their kids from getting the flu. Many pharmacies on the main street are also delivering private Covid shots to patients who can’t get them through the NHS. One dose might cost as much as £99 ($134 USD).

But getting tested is different now. The NHS no longer offers free Covid testing to most patients. You can acquire them at drugstores or online instead. Some experts are worried that fewer tests could imply that fewer cases are being recorded and that it takes longer to respond to outbreaks.

The UKHSA has modified its advise for people who are sick, especially if they have a high temperature or feel too sick to undertake their normal daily activities. If you can, remain home and don’t get too close to those who are weak. People who can’t be alone should nevertheless wear masks. Even if the “Living with Covid” regulation can’t be enforced by law, it is nevertheless very important for stopping the virus from spreading.

A lot of the public health messages these days are about how to stay healthy, but many people don’t agree, which has made things more complicated. A new study from South Korea that Biomarker Research presented indicated that Covid vaccines “might raise the risk of cancer.” Researchers and doctors have been very critical of this study, stating that its conclusions are “superficially alarming” and don’t have any solid scientific facts to back them up. The people who wrote the study didn’t say how vaccines could cause cancer, and experts who weren’t involved in the study were quick to point out that there isn’t good proof that mRNA vaccines are linked to cancer.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK and other public health agencies have once again said that Covid vaccines are safe and work. There is no proof that they stop tumor suppressors from operating or cause cancer cells proliferate faster.

The results even had an effect on politicians in the UK. Dr. Aseem Malhotra, a cardiologist who is known for being against vaccines, has been kicked out of the Reform UK political party. Malhotra, who is related to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a candidate for president in the US, made headlines when he stated that the Covid vaccine may have something to do with King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, contracting cancer recently. Scientists sharply disagreed with these findings, saying they were unfounded and reckless.

People are afraid and don’t know what to make of the new versions on social media. A lot of people are tired of hearing about another wave of Covid, but some are paying attention to the new symptoms, such the weird, hurting throat that isn’t usually an indication of the seasonal flu. Someone on X (now Twitter) commented, “It’s the worst sore throat I’ve ever had,” talking about their encounter with what was probably the Nimbus type. Some patients indicate that their symptoms are similar to those of tonsillitis or strep throat.

People in charge of public health still stress how essential context is. Bad things still happen very seldom, even if more people are getting sick, especially those who have been vaccinated. For most healthy people, the illness is just a mild to moderate respiratory infection, but it can still be bothersome and get in the way.

People who are older, have poor immune systems, or have health problems that last a long time are still the most at risk. These groups can be very worried, even if they only have a mild case of Covid. These people need immunizations, early detection, and alternative approaches to treat their illnesses, such antivirals.

As winter creeps closer, health experts are telling people to remain alert, stay aware, and be ready. The development of Stratus and Nimbus marks a new chapter in the Covid story. It also reminds us that the virus is still out there and that knowing about it in our communities and taking care of ourselves are still good ways to deal with its impacts.
