Restaurant Owner Stands Firm as City Questions Tribute Display

Posted on September 10, 2025

People are talking more and more about a memorial display that Johnny Brann, who owns a restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, put up outside his shop. Brann, who owns Brann’s Steakhouse and Grille, constructed the display to honor police officers and soldiers who died while working. There are a lot of American flags, as well as police and military flags, and placards that honor those who have died. Brann thinks the display is a good way to show respect and gratitude to those who served.

The city, on the other hand, believes that the display is outside the rules for zoning in the city. According to the legislation, Grand Rapids officials declared that the number and size of the signs and flags are too huge and too many for commercial structures. The city hasn’t had Brann take everything down right away, but they have told him he needs to either cut back on the exhibit or acquire a special permit called a zoning variance.

Brann doesn’t only think of the lawsuit as a legal matter; it feels personal to him. He thinks the city is trying to stop a memorial that means a lot to him and the community. He has said in public that the display is more than just adornment; it’s a meaningful and genuine way to remember those who died in service. Brann said, “These are people who gave it all.” “We should at least remember them.”

Instead of ignoring the city’s warning, Brann is going to ask for the variance. This process includes filling out forms, paying fees, and traveling to public meetings where city leaders and residents can share their thoughts. The ultimate decision will be made by a city zoning board. There is no guarantee that the variance will be approved, and it could take weeks or even months. Brann says he is still determined to go through with the process while still standing up for the memorial.

A number of people in the area and on social media have been talking about the show. A lot of people, including military, police officers, and normal people, have spoken out in support of Brann. They say they agree with what he’s doing and that the city is being too hard on him. People have posted a lot of photographs of the flags and posters online, usually with messages about being patriotic and doing the right thing.

But the issue hasn’t been simple. Along with the memorial flags, Brann put up banners with political themes. Some of these signs poked fun of local authorities or brought up problems that people didn’t agree with. Because of the provocative messages, several people in the neighborhood thought the exhibit had become too political. Brann took down the banners that didn’t directly memorialize the dead warriors in response to these complaints. He said he didn’t want to get into political discussions; he just wanted to respect the people who served.

Brann’s decision to take down the political signs shows that he’s prepared to make bargains, but not if it involves giving up the major homage. He thinks the display is more about respect than politics and should be a place to remember.

City officials said they are not attempting to be rude to those who served or stop Brann’s homage. They believe that zoning restrictions are designed to keep the city looking nice and to treat all businesses the same. They are afraid that if one individual breaks the rules, it will be tougher to enforce them. They also say they appreciate the subject is delicate and are willing to deal with Brann through the courts.

Even if things are hard, Brann is still hopeful. He believes that the support he has gotten from the community, like from families of deceased service members, police groups, and veteran groups, has moved him. A lot of people have praised him for remembering those who gave their lives in the line of duty, which they say is often overlooked.

Brann has made it clear that he won’t give up. He thinks this isn’t about causing trouble; it’s about doing what’s right. He wants to look into other ways to keep the memorial in place if the city turns down his request for a variance.

For now, the flags are still up outside Brann’s eatery. They are both ways to show respect for someone and a small act of disobedience. The city needs to find a way to balance its zoning rules with the strong popular support for honoring those who died in service.
