That day, the wedding hall appeared like a big house. The groom’s face was lit up by the golden lights. Rodrigo is a successful businessman who owns a chain of high-end restaurants in Mexico City.
Camila, the beautiful young bride, stood next to him in a sequined mermaid dress and smiled as she welcomed the guests.
Rodrigo had been holding hands with his wife, Mariana, just a year ago. Nobody knew that. She was a kind woman who quietly remained by him from the time they had nothing until he became a man that everyone looked up to.
But Rodrigo was not like that. He and Camila met at a business dinner. She was young, hot, and knew how to make a guy happy. Rodrigo began to treat Mariana cruelly little by little. He made her cry, blamed her for things that weren’t
her fault, and made her very fatigued
Rodrigo’s last deed was to secretly phone a hospital and sign the papers to get his wife into a mental hospital while she was crying in his office. He said she was “having delusions.”
That day, Mariana looked at him with tears in her eyes as they took her away.
“I’m not sick; I’m just tired…” You believe in me, right?
Rodrigo, on the other hand, did not glance at her. There was no room for her in his brain, only for Camila.
Rodrigo was going to have a spectacular wedding a year later. He didn’t know that Mariana had already left the hospital three months before. She moved around 200 kilometers from the capital, learnt how to drive, and sold all of her jewelry to buy a used supercar from 2016. She just had one goal: to go to the wedding, not to beg, but to terminate that part of her life.
The person in charge of the ceremony said that the wedding cake was being cut, and the music got louder. At that point, the orchestra could not be heard above the roar of an engine outside the hall. Everyone who was present turned their heads in shock. A black sports car drove up to the entrance and slammed on the brakes, generating a cloud of white smoke.
Mariana left. She didn’t wear a nice outfit or have her hair done up. She donned a simple white dress and let her hair down. She appeared cold and steady. She was holding a beautifully wrapped gift package. Everyone in the hall stopped chatting.
Rodrigo stopped moving, and his face went pale:
“Mariana… What are you doing here?
She smiled but didn’t say anything. She walked up to the stage and handed Camila the box. Her voice was clear and resonated in the crowded auditorium:
“Good job, everyone. This is my present for your wedding. I promise you won’t forget it.
Camila opened the box even though she was shaking. There were no bombs or weapons inside, only a collection of official papers, such the title deeds to the full restaurant chain and the transfer agreement that Rodrigo signed.
Mariana kept saying in a calm voice:
“I worked hard, spent my money, and made sacrifices to give him what he has today. But I’ve already sold all my shares to the individual who owns most of the business. At this wedding, Rodrigo is now just “the traitorous groom.”
Everyone in the room was amazed. Important people in business began to get up and leave, and the phones kept ringing. Rodrigo slumped down in fear, and Camila held the box as if it were hurting her hands.
Mariana smiled at him with a frown:
“You aren’t crazy; you never were.” You are foolish for believing you could bury me to be with your boyfriend.
She spoke those things and then turned around and exited the room, leaving everyone else stunned. Some people clapped for her to show their admiration. The sports car’s engine screamed again, and Mariana ran into the smoke, leaving behind a wedding that had gone wrong from the start.
