Learning This Changed the Way I Do Things Every Day

Posted on August 27, 2025

Everyone who has a pet understands how hard it is to keep fleas away from them. A lot of products that say they will get rid of fleas don’t perform very well or just work for a short time. But my grandmother has a trick that has been passed down in our family for a long time. It doesn’t take much effort, and it actually works. I’ll share her simple method in this blog and teach you how to utilize it at home.

Fleas are small bugs that don’t have wings. They thrive by biting animals and drinking their blood. They make pets scratch a lot, which can lead to skin problems or allergic reactions. Some fleas can even have tapeworms on them. Fleas don’t simply live on animals. They can also be found in your carpets, furniture, and even outside in your yard. That’s why it’s so difficult to get rid of them. You have to treat them often because of their life cycle.

A lot of people utilize flea shampoos, collars, powders, or medications. These can assist sometimes, but they don’t always work for every pet. Some need to be taken all the time, while others can cause adverse effects, including itching or allergic reactions. Also, certain fleas don’t respond to these treatments anymore because they are now immune to particular substances.

That’s why my grandma’s way is so great: it’s easy, natural, and safe. Not only does her method eradicate fleas, but it also keeps them from coming back. To prepare a natural flea medication, she blends food-grade diatomaceous earth with a few drops of aromatic oils. This mixture creates an environment that fleas find unappealing, and it eliminates them without harming your dogs.

Diatomaceous earth is a soft rock that turns into a fine powder when it fractures. It feels soft to humans, but it has microscopic sharp edges that hurt the fleas’ outer covering, making them dry out and die. Essential oils like cedarwood or lavender can help keep fleas away and make your home smell lovely. Some oils can even help fight germs. When combined, cedarwood and lavender essential oils create a strong flea treatment that is safe for both pets and people.

This is how you can use Nana’s method at home:

First, purchase some food-grade diatomaceous earth and some essential oil, such as cedarwood or lavender.

Put 10 to 15 drops of the oil into one cup of the diatomaceous earth.

Sprinkle the mixture lightly over your pet’s fur, especially around the neck, back, and belly, which are places where fleas like to hide.

Gently rub the powder into their fur with your hands.

Put the same mix on your pet’s bed, the carpet, or any other place they like to lie down.

Leave it there for at least 48 hours, and then clean the area well with a vacuum.

Do this once a week, or more often if you need to, to keep fleas away.

Use this procedure with care:

Use diatomaceous earth that is safe for food. The industrial version hurts animals.

Don’t use too much powder because it can make things dusty and make it difficult for your pet to breathe.

Use only essential oils that are safe for pets. For instance, stay away from eucalyptus or tea tree oil because they can be harmful.

If you don’t reapply the mixture often, especially during flea season, fleas can come back.

Many pet owners have had wonderful success with this strategy. “I wasn’t sure at first,” Sarah from Texas stated, “but after a week, my dog was free of fleas and much more comfortable.” Mark from Florida said, “It worked really well—my house smells great, and my dog hasn’t had a single flea since we started doing this every week.”

You might be asking yourself:

If my pet licks diatomaceous earth, is it safe?
Yes, it’s safe as long as it’s food-grade. Just make sure they don’t breathe in too much of the powder while you put it on.

How often should I do this?
Once a week is typically adequate, but if fleas are a severe problem, you can do it more often.

Can I use these treatments on cats?
Yes, but you need to be cautious about the essential oils you use. Use a lower amount of oils that are safe for cats.

Here are some more ways to keep fleas away for beneficial purposes:

You should wash your pet’s bedding in hot water a lot.

Please remember to vacuum carpets and furniture regularly, and dispose of the vacuum bags promptly after use.

Keep your yard clean, and when you need to kill fleas outside, try using natural methods like nematodes.

Make sure to take your pet to the vet often for flea checks and general health treatment.

To sum up, Nana’s quick flea treatment is a cheap and easy technique to get rid of fleas without using harsh chemicals. This procedure is natural and genuinely effective. It won’t hurt your pets or your home. A lot of individuals are already seeing fantastic results, and now you can too. Try it out and see if it helps your furry buddy feel better in a safe and natural way.
