A Natural Way to Repel Flies, Mosquitoes, and Cockroaches Using Common Leaves

Posted on July 22, 2025

We’ve all had to deal with bugs in our houses that are incredibly annoying, including flies, mosquitoes, and even cockroaches. Not only are they annoying because they buzz around your ears at night, bite your skin, and get into your food, but they are also very bad for your health. These bugs are known to spread diseases, and when they get into our personal space, they may quickly turn peaceful areas into annoying battlefields. There are a lot of chemical sprays and traps on sale, but more and more people are choosing safer, more natural options that won’t hurt kids, pets, or the environment.

You probably already have a lot of easy things around the house that can help with this issue. These natural repellents are not only easy to make, but they also work surprisingly well if you use them often. You probably already have the things you need to make your own insect spray at home. These things include sugar, baking powder, bay leaves, cloves, vinegar, shampoo, and vegetable oil. This is a safe, cheap, and eco-friendly way to do it.

First, let’s discuss about the bugs. These little yet tough intruders do well in warm, calm water. You may make a simple mosquito trap by mixing one cup of hot water, five teaspoons of sugar, and a little yeast. Take off the top of a 2-liter plastic container, add the sugar and yeast, and then turn the top over and put it back on the base. This is a simple but efficient trap that uses the smell of fermenting sugar to lure mosquitoes in and keep them from escaping the bottle. You can help keep the number of mosquitoes down over time by putting this DIY trap in places where you see a lot of them, like near windows, doors, or shady corners.

A nice-smelling bug spray made from bay leaves and cloves (or nails, as some recipes call them) will perform well against flies and cockroaches. Boil 10 cloves and 15 bay leaves in a cup of water for 10 minutes. After the liquid has cooled, run it through a filter and into a spray bottle. This herbal blend smells pungent, which keeps flies and cockroaches away. Spray this stuff in the corners of your pantry, behind sinks, on bathroom tiles, and anywhere else you’ve seen these bugs. It’s a safe approach to keep bugs away and make your home smell good at the same time.

You may also make a spray that keeps bugs away and does more than one thing by mixing half a cup of ordinary shampoo, vegetable oil, and white vinegar. Put all three things into a spray bottle and shake it up well. This mix works great on locations where bugs like to live, like window sills, door frames, and other places. The vinegar and oil keep bugs away since they smell and feel powerful, while the shampoo makes the combination attach to things. You can use it inside and outside, but don’t put it on porous surfaces or near things that break easily.

These simple and natural remedies work best when your house is tidy as well. Cleaning the floors, wiping down the counters, closing food containers, and taking out the garbage on a regular basis can all help discourage bugs from trying to enter into your home in the first place. Don’t leave water in plant trays, sinks, or pet dishes for too long. Standing water is a great place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

These simple changes you may make around the house can make your life a lot easier. They are cheap, don’t have any chemicals in them, and can be easily adjusted to meet your needs and objects. If you decided to try any of these natural repellents, please let others know how it went and what worked best for you. Your comments could help someone else finally get rid of their bug problems. Here’s to a home that is naturally pest-free and peaceful.
