After Championship Win, Community Grieves Loss of Young Athlete

Posted on June 20, 2025

A town in Pennsylvania is mourning the untimely death of a teenager footballer when the joy of a successful win in the field would lead to grief the following morning.

Dauphin County, Pennsylvania is in grief and huge shock of the unexpected death of a 10 year old Bryson Funk. The child passed away on June 12, 2025, as a reminder that, even the brightest people, lives, similarly to the sunsets, are ephemeral, as he had a heart attack only several hours after his baseball team won a championship.

On the 11 th (evening) of June, Bryson had come on the mound and pitched these last three innings in a game played by Linglestown Colts and struck out the last man, assuring the victory of his team.

However, that joy did not last long on Thursday morning when the news was spread that Bryson had fallen unconscious and was rushed to hospital where he died. The cause of the heart episode was later confirmed by his family to be as a result of myocarditis or inflammation of the heart.

The death of this person shocked friends, the family, and teammates. Elias Vilfort, a nine-year-old teammate who was a good friend of Bryson, felt much better writing the letters that pronounced 3s, the number Bryson wore proudly as he threw the pitch during matches, around the infield at Koons Park.

Elias even remembered the exciting image of Bryson pitching the last ball in the game, on Wednesday. He would physically, like, he would do like a backflip to make a play or he would slide in the muddy dirt and he would like act casual. That is the kind of player he was kind of like, said Elias.

However, it was not the only thing that had brought the two together in baseball. Bryson fell in love with the food of the father of Elias and in common they mostly ate eating as they gathered the trading cards and they enjoyed the rides in Hersheypark. Since Elias was in love with both families, Bryson apparently belonged to both.

The last weekend was meant to mark their first-time playing at the same team. Elias and Bryson were to experience playing on the All-Star team as they wore the jerseys number five and 24 respectively. It was unfortunate that did not happen.

Elias however made promises to the effect that all their future matches will be won to honour Bryson despite not winning the tournament. Moreover, he had said that other individuals had contributed baseball cards to the growing collection his deceased friend had and he was eager to go through them with the dad of Bryson.

The support began to pour in when the information about the tragedy spread. The news was made public by Nicki Brantner, a relative, who created a GoFundMe page, in which she spoke about Bryson as a vibrant, active guy, and added that nobody could ever imagine it.

Brantner showed the sympathy to the family and requested help to cover the expenses of the burial and memorial services. With more than 700 gifts, there was at least 45 thousand dollars rinsed by June 18. The fundraiser also emphasized that every person who cannot give something may always do it by praying or telling about the initiative.

Social media in the meantime became a group grieving arena. Amanda Vilfort, the mother of Elias, made a post in which she noted that he lost his best friend and asked people to donate to the Funk family.

According to one of Bryson close relatives Melanie Funk, she recalled Bryson as a kind-hearted, full of life and always knew how to make you smile. She wrote of his personal effects on her and how she once got talked out of spending 200 dollars on fishing gear by him with the words: pretty please.

Some of the local organisations have also shared Facebook tributes. 717 athletics, a nonprofit, competitive cheer organisation, called it a tragic and unexpected event and asked the society to support the Funk family.

They provided the links to GoFundMe page and a Meal Train signup and this is because although Bryson would not have that much time, the love that he gave and the moments that he created will always live on.

Other tributes were there. Bryson brought the cousin Armond Carter of Bryson back to memory, Bryson saw marnies, as did his cousin in Bryson since he was caring and thoughtful. He made a prayer to the deceased parents of Amy and Todd Funk, and said that he was thankful that he got to know him.

Moreover, Dean Behrendt did the same thing in a post he wrote in the newly formed Facebook group dedicated to Bryson Funk, the “Bryson Funk Memorials Wall”, where he recalled throwing ball around with Bryson and seen him jump over his Jeep, something that now seems a fortune. What a terrific kid Bryson was. I used to like to see him at the ball park always,” Dean continued.

The loss also attracted the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation, an organization which helps to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest among youngsters. In the story taken by Bryson as a reference, the group said it is very important to protect young hearts because one out of 300 children is in danger.

This tragedy has hit a town which once saw the brilliance of Bryson on the baseball pitch. Pals, family members, and neighbours now hold on to the memories of a little boy who used to play with his heart and live happily.
