Monday (19 May) saw Donald and Melania Trump gather in the Rose Garden to make their statement.
Melania Trump just violated a political rule during a key White House occasion.
The Take It Down Act which protects against online s.ex.ual exploitation, was signed into law by Donald Trump this Tuesday, thanks in part to Melania’s support.
As a result of the new law, people can now face federal charges for both sharing intimate pictures without permission and threatening to do so with deepfakes made by artificial intelligence.
Based on AP News, websites and social media must now take down this type of material within 48 hours after a request from the victim. They also have to work toward deleting any extra copies of the material.
The unprecedented step of Melania signing the bill saw the First Lady call it a national success for helping shield children from the online use of artificial intelligence for fake photographs.
She explained:“AI is the next generation’s sweet fix and it is designed to impact how our kids think.” However, these technologies can be used against people, help shape their viewpoints, color their emotions and, unfortunately, be dangerous.
According to Trump, ‘because of such technology, countless women have faced harassment from explicit images they did not want shared’ which he describes as ‘entirely wrong’.
It’s very uncommon for a first lady to put her name on a bill, but Trump encouraged Melania to do it anyway.
“Go on and sign it for her,” the president said.
Because Melania Trump isn’t a real president, her signature is a simple symbol.
Trump credited his wife with efforts to spread awareness about the concern.
“You really accomplished a lot,” he said and when he learned of the legislation, he added: “It seemed big and significant and you managed to do it.” Therefore, I want to shared my congratulations with you.”
At a press conference, Karoline Leavitt said the president and first lady will sign the Take It Down Act today in the Rose Garden.
It was Mrs. Melania Trump who helped make sure this legislation was approved.
Leavitt went on to say: “The Take It Down Act helps victims of digital abuse by making sure internet companies remove explicit material from their websites and by enabling prosecutors to bring charges against people who upload non-consensual images to the internet.”
Members of the House and Senate, as well as survivors, their families and supporters, were met by the First Lady to help get the bill passed.
We appreciate the First Lady’s commitment to this subject and she will stay focused on helping American children by following the Be Best agenda going forward.
In taking on the Take It Down Act, Melania is continuing with the same principles from her Be Best campaign during her husband’s earlier time in office.
It pays special attention to children’s safety, social media habits and opioid abuse.
