Farmer John was located on a peaceful country road.
As more time passed, more and more traffic appeared on the roads daily. He couldn’t keep his chickens safe because they were being trampled over by moving cars many times a day.
For this reason, Farmer John asked his sheriff, “You need to address all these people going so fast and killing my chickens.”
“So, sheriff, what should I do?” asked the deputy.
“Enough is enough, fix this issue with those insane drivers as soon as you can!”
So the following day the county workers were directed by the sheriff to put up a sign that read: SLOW–SCHOOL CROSSING
Three days after the incident, Farmer John told the sheriff that drivers always cause trouble on his property. It appears that seeing the ‘school crossing’ sign encourages drivers to speed up rather than slow down.
Therefore, the sheriff sends the county workers and they post another sign that reads: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY
This increased their speed considerably. Every day for three weeks, Farmer John would call and call.
He stated one final time to the sheriff, “All you are doing is covering up the problem.” Am I allowed to place my own sign on the premises?
The sheriff said, “By all means, hang up your own sign.” He would do almost anything the Farmer John asked to make him quit calling each day.
Farmer John stopped contacting the sheriff after that incident. About three weeks after that, the sheriff became so curious that he decided to ring Farmer John. Is it true that the drivers have been challenging? Did you hang your sign somewhere public?
“You bet I did.” Since then, there haven’t been any killed chickens. I must go now. Right now, I am very occupied. The conversation ended as he dropped the phone.
The sheriff thought to himself, “I should walk out there and examine the sign. It could be a good way to slow down all the drivers heading through town…”
So the sheriff went to Farmer John’s, but his mouth hung open as soon as he saw the sign. Wood was spray-painted with the text: NU.DIST COLONY
