Kathy Ireland: The 1980s Supermodel Who Changed the Face of Beauty

Posted on May 7, 2025

In addition to dominating the runways in the 1980s and 1990s, Kathy Ireland appeared in 13 straight Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues and accumulated an incredible wealth of $420 million.

She was the epitome of iconic, with the world at her feet and Elizabeth Taylor as her guide.

However, nothing will prepare you for the current appearance of this 62-year-old great.

found in high school
Kathy Ireland became the perfect magazine cover queen thanks to her radiant smile, gorgeous red hair, and her iconic blue eyes. In addition to drawing attention, her innate attractiveness and immaculate body helped to define a certain period.

Kathy Ireland, who was born in 1963 in sunny Santa Barbara, began modeling as a youngster and quickly gained international recognition. She soon gained international recognition and magazine covers thanks to her all-American charm and Hollywood-caliber glitz.

In 1979, when Ireland was just sixteen, it all began. Her journey to superstardom began when Elite Model Management found her at her high school.

Ireland also encountered the negative aspects of the modeling profession early in her career.

Being a model is really just shutting up and posing; regardless of your appearance, people will criticize you. In 2014, she said to FIRST For Women, “They’ll discover something’s wrong with you.”

When she was a teenager, a photographer once asked her to appear topless, which was inappropriate. The photographer didn’t respect Kathy’s “no,” even though she didn’t feel comfortable.

He shoved me and got a little rough with me while he was pressing. Therefore, I decked him,” Kathy said.

The difficulties facing the modeling business
The 1980s and 1990s were a true golden age for Ireland’s modeling career. She appeared on the covers of prominent magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, and Vogue. She made three appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which stands out in her career. Her famous 1989 cover is particularly memorable.

Ireland says that experience was especially remarkable because Julie Campbell, the editor of Sports Illustrated at the time, was “a strong business leader” and “an amazing woman.”

Ireland has consistently been open about the difficulties faced by the modeling profession, calling it a “tough business.”

She did not, however, take delight in her discipline. She said, “Perfection was never an adjective that ever fit me.” “I tend to be rebellious at times so it didn’t always work for me,” she added, acknowledging her rebellious streak. She even walked off jobs in certain cases. Despite these disappointments, Ireland never lost sight of the fact that her career as a model was short-lived. She revealed, “I was trying and failing at many businesses along the way.”

Kathy Ireland didn’t sit back and enjoy her success as a model. She went into acting, securing parts in movies and television series, but her real vocation was in business.

Most models were riding the wave of fame, but Kathy was already planning for the future. She understood the runway would not endure forever, even at the height of her fame, and she was subtly setting the stage for something much more significant.

She received assistance from Warren Buffett.
Few models before her dared to take the risk of founding Kathy Ireland Worldwide (KIWW) in the early 1990s.

Ireland was given the chance to start her own apparel line by Kmart in 1993 after her name-brand socks sold an astounding 100 million pairs. An international licensing empire swiftly grew out of what began as a small sock line.

“A lot of people told us that it would never work! A pair of socks cannot be the foundation of a massive lifestyle brand! “You need to start selling swimwear in stores,” Kathy advised Darlene Schacht in 2008.

According to Forbes magazine, Kathy Ireland Worldwide has grown into a multibillion-dollar company with yearly retail sales of over $1.9 billion.

Following the counsel of her mentor and close friend Warren Buffett, Ireland branched out into home goods after leaving Kmart in 2003. This calculated action contributed to her brand’s continued success in a number of sectors.

Kathy decided to concentrate on affordable, high-quality products for regular people, especially middle-class families, rather than pursuing upscale luxury markets. This practical strategy made Kathy Ireland a pioneer in the field of entrepreneurship and helped KIWW grow into a billion-dollar business.

She learned this from her father.
Her business, Kathy Ireland Worldwide, made an incredible $3.1 billion in retail sales in 2021 alone. Ireland’s brand, ranked number 15 in the world, has grown to be a force in many other industries and has earned her a place in the Licensing Hall of Fame.

Numerous active fashion models have found inspiration in her incredible journey from cover girl to multimillionaire entrepreneur, demonstrating that success involves much more than just posing for the camera.

“Thousands of hours of work performed by many, many people” is what Kathy attributes to her accomplishment. However, she also admits that her background and the important skills she gained from her father, John, a labor relations professional, are largely responsible for her motivation and work ethic.

I was always working as a kid. My father always urged me to give it my all, even while I was delivering newspapers. Exceed the customer’s expectations. Place the paper on the front porch if the consumer anticipates it in the driveway. “To underpromise and overdeliver was the cornerstone of our education,” Kathy explains.

Despite her professional success, Ireland has never lost sight of her charitable roots. Kathy uses her riches and connections to help others, whether it’s through poverty reduction, healthcare, or education.

Kathy Ireland’s kids
She has made it apparent that leaving a lasting legacy involves more than simply business; it also involves actually changing the world. Despite everything, Ireland is a loving mother to her three kids.

In 1988, the former high-profile model wed Dr. Greg Olsen. They have three children together: Lily, Chloe, and son Erik.

As my children grow older and their personalities truly begin to emerge, I especially like spending time with them one-on-one. In 2007, she told People, “You don’t need a whole day, and it doesn’t have to be an elaborate, expensive activity.”

Her tutor was Elizabeth Taylor.
Throughout her work, Kathy Ireland has long acknowledged the importance of her family as a source of support. But what had the biggest influence on her career and personal life was her close friendship with the legendary Elizabeth Taylor.

The two celebrities developed a relationship that went beyond their shared celebrity status by going to public events together. Taylor was the first to defend Ireland after she was criticized for her performance as the on-air host of ABC’s 2010 pre-Oscar special.

At a period when Ireland was facing criticism, Taylor reportedly remarked, “I have never seen anyone epitomize glamour and grace and professionalism like she did.”

Ireland frequently discussed the significant impact Taylor had on her life in the years that followed. She acknowledges that Taylor’s advice influenced her career in business, fashion, and philanthropy and credits the late actress as a mentor.

Devoted Christian who opposes abortion
Kathy, a devoted Christian and an opponent of abortion, is now sixty-two years old. She still gives her all to the things she loves, and many people find her refreshingly optimistic attitude toward aging admirable.

She claims, “It’s a journey, and I’m actually enjoying getting older.” ” I wouldn’t change a thing in the past. Every year, I want to get better. I look forward to old age as long as I continue to improve and don’t want to stagnate.

She learned a valuable lesson from her modeling career that she still applies today: Her identity was neither defined or destroyed by the opinions of others.

She credits her ability to remain healthy and active as one of her greatest delights, and at 62, she is as vivacious as ever.

I had an incredible metabolism because I was a late bloomer who continued to get taller until I was in my 20s. The fact that I could have hot fudge sundaes for breakfast made a big difference. I don’t take it for granted that, at sixty, I can still do all the things I enjoy. I’m really appreciative of my health.

Her appearance today
Kathy incorporates fitness into her daily life in a subtle way to maintain her vibrant attitude. She says, “I adore the great outdoors.” “As a seventh-generation Californian, I adore the mountains and the ocean. I also enjoy hiking, biking, surfing, and taking walks.”

Kathy Ireland has never followed a rigid diet or classified things as “good” or “bad.” Instead, she has always approached eating with balance. She accepted the concept of balance instead, thinking that self-deprivation was never the best course of action. Over the years, she experimented with many diets, but she never really stuck with any of them because she preferred to concentrate on being healthy rather than following rigorous rules.

She was careful to include as many raw, fresh fruits and vegetables as she could in her meals. She eventually fell in love with berries, bananas, apples, and tropical fruits. She even developed a fondness for Brussels sprouts, something she had previously detested.

At sixty-two, Kathy Ireland still looks fantastic and exudes positivity. She has remained loyal to her roots by juggling a prosperous business with a healthy way of life.

Her acceptance of aging and her continued physical and mental activity are admirable. She is a real role model because, despite her success, she maintains a personable and grounded demeanor. She is obviously having a great time and has no intention of slowing down anytime soon!
