Dozens of Students Involved in Serious Bus Crash on Return from Field Trip

Posted on April 19, 2025

A bus transporting students from Pine Ridge Middle School in South Carolina tipped over on Interstate 77 Thursday afternoon, ending a regular school field trip tragically. The incident left several children hurt and necessitated a massive emergency response.

Preliminary reports state that the bus, which was carrying two adults and thirty-five pupils, was returning from a field trip when a catastrophic tyre blowout occurred. In the middle of heavy afternoon traffic, the bus swerved off course and eventually flipped onto its side in the northbound lanes of I-77.

The incident, which happened just before three o’clock in the afternoon, caused panic and mayhem right away. The yellow school bus was on its side, the glass was broken, and emergency personnel were rushing to free the people inside. Witnesses called the situation “horrific.” Firefighters had to use specialised equipment to remove some of the children who were seen climbing out of damaged windows.

One driver who saw the collision remarked, “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.” The bus simply rocked and swerved. Before they brought them out, you could see the children pacing the interior.

Within minutes, emergency personnel arrived on the scene. In addition to numerous ambulances, fire trucks, and law enforcement vehicles, five medical helicopters were also sent in due to the seriousness of the situation. In order to triage and get the injured to local hospitals, medics worked quickly.

At least a dozen kids with injuries ranging from minor scrapes and bruises to more severe wounds were taken to several hospitals in the area. As of Friday morning, no fatalities have been recorded, though authorities have not yet confirmed the entire extent of injuries.

David Jennings, the director of Lexington County EMS, spoke to the media late Thursday, describing the response as “a true community effort” and praising first responders for their brave and quick efforts.

There were a lot of young trauma sufferers that we were addressing. To make sure those children received the assistance they required as quickly as possible, everyone on the scene collaborated, Jennings said.

A collaborative investigation into the cause of the collision has been initiated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Although inspectors will be looking at the vehicle’s maintenance records as well as other contributing factors including road conditions and driving history, early indications suggest that a blown tyre was the main reason.

According to reports, the bus’s driver, who has not been made public, is one of the injured but is assisting investigators.

A statement was sent Thursday night by Pine Ridge Middle School, a close-knit public school outside of Columbia, South Carolina, expressing profound sorrow and sympathy for the affected students and families.

The message said, “Today’s events have devastated us.” “Our children, staff, and their families are in our prayers and thoughts. To provide all required assistance, we are collaborating closely with the school system and emergency agencies.

To assist kids and staff in processing the horrific occurrence, crisis counsellors were sent to the school on Thursday night and will be there for the next few days.

After hearing the news, a number of parents hurried to nearby hospitals; many of them claimed they were unaware of the incident until their kids called—or, in certain situations, the school or emergency personnel.

Amanda R., whose son was in seventh grade, described it as “every parent’s worst nightmare.” My heart just fell when I learnt that I couldn’t get in touch with him. Although so many others are not, I’m glad he’s alright.

In South Carolina and elsewhere, discussions regarding school bus safety have been rekindled by this accident. More stringent safety inspections, improved driver training, and possibly even seatbelt requirements on school buses—a topic that is still controversial in many states—are already being pushed for by advocates.

As the Pine Ridge Middle School community starts the gradual process of recovering from what should have been a happy day of learning and exploration, the emphasis is still on physical and emotional rehabilitation.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol encourages anyone with more information on the collision to get in touch.

The story is still evolving. As more information becomes available, more updates will be given.
