COVID ‘Nimbus’ Variant Spreads Quickly in UK, Cases Double in a Month

Posted on October 7, 2025

A sore throat that feels like a “razor blade” and a croaky voice are becoming common signs of the new Covid variants that are spreading in the UK and US.

There has been a rise in infections since August, with cases doubling. The strains XFG, also known as Stratus, and NB.1.8.1, also known as Nimbus, are to blame.

Experts warn that these strains are just as deadly as previous Covid variants.

But the virus has modified its genes recently, which could make it more likely that people will get sick.

Health officials started their winter vaccination campaign Wednesday, pushing millions to get their flu and Covid vaccinations as hospitalizations soar.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that the number of positives had gone up from 7.6% to 8.4% in just one week, and the number of admissions had gone up from 2.0 to 2.73 per 100,000.

The CDC reports that the levels of Covid in wastewater in the US are “moderate,” but four states are reporting “very high” amounts, and things are getting worse in the Northeast.

Researchers are still researching into the two strains, but they think they are different from what was known before.

Some people think that a sore throat that feels like a razor blade is a definite sign that you have one of the new varieties of Covid, which are becoming increasingly widespread.

Number of new Covid cases each day

Patients have stated they had common Covid symptoms such problems breathing, chest tightness, a sore or scratchy throat, headaches, body aches, and a loss of taste or smell.

People who have a dry cough, are tired, and have a fever have been associated to Stratus.

Dr. Aaron Glatt, an expert on infectious diseases in the US, also told Today.com that patients were stating they were in “severe pain, as if their throat was covered in razor blades.”

He went on to state, “Some patients with the most recent Covid variant have used this phrase to describe their sore throat symptoms, but it isn’t specific to Covid.”

In January, Stratus was first detected in Southeast Asia.

By June, the variant had spread to 38 countries, so the World Health Organization declared it a “variant under monitoring.”

Nimbus was discovered in China about the same period, and it swiftly traveled to Europe and the US.

Last month, Stratus made up around 63% of the monitored cases in the UK, while Nimbus made up 25%, according to the UKHSA.

The health department recommends that anyone who have symptoms should stay home if they can and stay away from people who are weak.

If you have to go out, you should wear a mask.

But last week they changed their advise to state, “Current data does not show that these variants cause more severe illness than other variants that are already out there.”

If you have a high temperature or other symptoms of a respiratory infection like Covid and don’t feel well enough to go to work or do your normal activities, you should stay home and avoid contact with those who are at risk.

“The Living with Covid advice hasn’t changed for those of us who can’t stay home. It will also lower the chance of spreading your infection to other people.”

You can’t get free Covid tests from the NHS anymore, but you can still buy them at drugstores.

persons over 75, persons with weak immune systems, and people who live in care homes can get the winter Covid booster from the NHS app, the internet, or walk-in clinics.

Women who are pregnant and kids can also get immunized. This year, neighborhood pharmacies will provide toddlers a flu shot.

UK ministers have said many times that they won’t deploy lockdowns unless a new, fatal strain of Covid appears.

Some pharmacists on the main street are delivering private Covid shots for as little as £99 ($134).

The UK government has said over and over that they won’t utilize lockdowns unless a really bad version of Covid comes out.

Officials believe that pandemic-era measures are no longer necessary since the population has built up a wall of immunity via several waves of infection and vaccine rollouts.

When Covid cases rise, they can still make a lot of people sick all around the country. This can cause problems with schools, the health service, and public transportation.

But officials don’t keep track of how many people have the virus in the same way they used to. The government is doing this to try to get things back to normal before Covid.

Just days after a South Korean study that sparked a lot of debate indicated that Covid vaccines “might raise the risk of cancer,” the number of cases is going up.

It was published in the journal Biomarker Research, but it didn’t say how the shots could make people sick.

Experts stated the results were “superficially alarming” and that the conclusions were overly broad.

Scientists have said several times that there is no strong proof that Covid vaccines inhibit tumor suppressors from operating or speed up the growth of cancer.
